"The North Of England Is Getting A Rough Deal" discussion

I'm not sure that I really understand this argument. Let's us suppose that a new High Speed line is built between Manchester and Leeds. What will the customer get -- probably a 4- or 5-train an hour service with long trains (8-9 cars) taking 25-30 mins. I doubt if it will be much better than...

"The North Of England Is Getting A Rough Deal" discussion

I would put forward the proposition that the problem between Leeds and Manchester is not the lack of speed but the lack of capacity, lack of both track and train capacity. If long trains were the norm instead of the 3-car mini trains, then a 45 min or so train journey could be quite a...

"The North Of England Is Getting A Rough Deal" discussion

I am somewhat bemused by this sudden enthusiasm to increase capacity across the Pennines. It was only a year or so back that plans to 4-track the 5 mile stretch of line between Diggle and Marsden by restoring the two disused Standedge tunnels were abandoned. The reason given was that...

Boris Johnson proposes Stratford to be in Zones 2 & 3

I have always thought that Zone 2 should be merged into Zone 1. There are too many zones at the moment.

    New transport minister imminent

Claire Perry is an interesting choice as a Transport Minister. As MP for Devizes she has been very vocal in advocating the extension of the GWR suburban electrification from Newbury to Hungerford, Kintbury and Bedwyn, a distance of 14 miles. Her response to the GWR refranchising (dated just a...

Salford Central - connection to Liverpool line?

The above description sounds good. I would presume that any Victoria-Liverpool train could then be held in Platform 4 until the line ahead was clear from any Piccadilly-Victoria crossing over to get to Platform 3.

    Worcestershire Parkway station progress

Building a new station on a single track section of line will by its very nature reduce the overall capacity of the line. Seems rather counter productive.

    Worcestershire Parkway station progress

So sounds like a bit more redoubling will probably be in the pipeline as well.

    Worcestershire Parkway station progress

Is the proposed station on an existing double track section of the Cotswold line ?

Salford Central - connection to Liverpool line?

Thanks, but I'm afraid it's a bit too detailed. One can't see the wood from the trees. I have seen some track diagrams diagrams a while back with two options , A) and B). I have forgotten where.

Salford Central - connection to Liverpool line?

Crikey. How confusing. This would then make Platform 5 used by Ordsall Chord bound trains (sensible). However does this not make the usage of Platform 4 more complicated as it is then used by both Victoria bound trains from Ordsall Chord and Chat Moss bound trains from Victoria. Surely not ?

Salford Central - connection to Liverpool line?

Thanks for that. I am very used to the terms 'Up' and 'Down' when referring to London but not so used to them in other parts of Britain. So just to make sure there is no confusion 'Up' means 'Towards Victoria' and 'Down' means 'Away from Victoria'. The use of Platforms 1-4 seems logical...

Salford Central - connection to Liverpool line?

I gather that the government has approved an extra three platforms as part of the local intrastructure program announced today. I have no details. The presume the extra platforms will be: - one direction to Victoria from Liverpool and Ordsall Chord - one direction to Liverpool - one...

    Tour de France Alterations

I presume that there are quite a number of 142s and 150s not being used on Merseyside because of the Huyton blockade. I would like to think that they all have been transferred to Yorkshire for the weekend. As to whether they have been or not, I have no idea.

    Peterborough to get Flyover

... but double track ... surely

    Peterborough to get Flyover

Although the Network Rail pamphlet does not state it, I am assuming that the proposed flyover will be two track to take both northbound and southbound traffic over the ECML. If the Stamford lines are slewed and the flyover starts in the middle, that will remove any at grade conflicts there...

    Cornwall and Liverpool investment

Given that the line between Plymouth and Penzance is two-track, what is there is stop a half hourly frequency along the route already ? Is the signalling really that bad that only 1 train per hour can run in each direction ? Surely not.

DfT Feb 25th (2014) meeting on Hull-Selby electrification

Well, let's hope so. The prospect of Trans Pennine trains to Hull being diesel hauled because the last few miles from Selby to Hull are not wired is a complete nonsense. This final piece of wiring has appeared as a no-brainer to most people bar the DfT. I'm sure it will get wired eventually...

DfT and Network Rail to look at Sheffield area electrification

I agree. I think this is just a local reporter rehashing (and exaggerating) the old story of Network Rail looking into various schemes. There has been no new statement in the last day or so from anyone. The story was barely worth printing.

George Osborne calls for new Manchester to Leeds high-speed rail

Until 09:00 this morning I thought that official position on capacity across the Pennines was quite simple: 1) Re-open the Woodhead Tunnel - No, not needed. 2) Re-Open the two disused Standedge tunnels to give a 5-mile section of quadruple track between Diggle and Marsden - No, not needed...
