How many diesels are currently in the Northern fleet? Obviously 120 new carriages to come. Surely the next big bang of electrification will be from Sheffield. Would release a ton of units by electrifying Nottingham - Leeds via Barnsley and Sheffield - Doncaster/Moorthorpe.

What will replace them though? I always wondered why EMT didn't order enough Meridians to completely replace their fleet of HSTs.

Crazy that they're able to run 5 TPE services and one local on TP North but only 2 expresses and 0.5 local per hour on TP South. How difficult is it to add a few passing loops?

Good to see Chester linked into cross-Pennine links, shame that the similarly sized Lincoln over in the East isn't afforded the same privilege. Would make a good end point for an additional trans-Pennine service via Sheffield.

The EMT are certainly better than the TPE services which are usually standing room only when I travel (usually off peak).

Would the 319s fit on Merseyrail?

Those Manchester - Sheffield services are bursting at the seems. If they're not being increased to 3 x ph they really need to go 6 carriage.

Is there the capacity South of Piccadilly for these additional services to Macclesfield, Stockport & Northwich?

Not much for Sheffield in this (except for the additional Worksop service).

Well they won't be the Pacer replacement, so unless a bidder convinces the DfT that there's a roll for them in increasing services then this idea will be heading for the same scrapheap as the D trains.

Would Liverpool - London via a reversal at Chester be one option for increasing Liverpool's services to London & making use of the curve?

The plan is to build a 3000 space multi-story carpark next to the station (on the current wasteground next to the viaduct) as spell as some vague talk about junction improvements. I agree, it's going to be traffic hell there (it already is!).

Indeed, saying "but it will benefit Barnsley and Rotherham better than a central station", why not apply that to Leeds and build a station somewhere between Leeds, Wakefield and Bradford like the White Rose Centre (ah yes, because that would be equally absurd).

Nope, the line passes underneath Crewe without stopping, classic compatible services however will stop en-route to Liverpool with a journey time of less than an hour to London (but no link to Manchester).

The videos on the HS2 website show detailed station locations but not lines (it just paints them as the crow flies). The Leeds Station will be at New Lane, just to the south of the river aire approx 300m from city station. Sheffield will be at Meadowhall. Nottingham at Toton Sidings, Manchester...

Would've been a real opportunity to grow the airport though. A bit of national infrastructure forethought for once.

It's not a huge station so it's feasible if there's no delays. Just up the footbridge & across one platform set.
