Tyne & Wear Metro Fleet Replacement: Awarded to Stadler

I wonder if the airport branch being closed for five days from today will help out with the resourcing issues!

Tyne & Wear Metro Fleet Replacement: Awarded to Stadler

Typically on the week i'm back in Newcastle for work the system appears to be melting down this morning. Where have all the 555s gone?!

Tyne & Wear Metro Fleet Replacement: Awarded to Stadler

    Thanks, interesting (and frustrating!).

Tyne & Wear Metro Fleet Replacement: Awarded to Stadler

I'd love to know how common the "swing on the straps/bar and kick out a window" incidents really were, maybe worth an FOI question one day. The lack of hand-holds on the new stock felt like a large inconvenience/safety issue for all passengers just to sidestep a potentially rare event.

If true, nice to see common sense prevail! Just a shame it took “incidents” to trigger the review.

    ECML Easter 2026

Sounds promising, thanks very much for looking.

My train just sailed through East Croydon!

How serious is this kind of thing for the driver? Just a bit of a telling off or something more formal? Hopefully not the latter as everyone makes mistakes!

    ECML Easter 2026

Planning on doing a London weekend over Easter in 2026, travelling from Edinburgh. Is there likely to be any engineering disruption on the ECML over the weekend or is it too early to say? Thanks in advance!

    Chaos with LNER reservations again

Ultimately, here's the problem with LNER's desire to be a reservation-mandatory railway: if they can't even get the basics of running reservations right then what's the point? I must admit I'm surprised the electronic reservation system on the snazzy-new Azuma fleet can't do realtime updates...

Tyne & Wear Metro Fleet Replacement: Awarded to Stadler

This is standard for all Nexus comms now, they really really want to point out that it's someone else's fault not theirs. Issues on the Sunderland line are usually described "problems with Network Rail infrastructure" for instance. Comes over a bit childish IMO.

If that's the case it's mind-boggling that improved panels weren't part of the 555 build. I understand that it takes time to modify designs, re-tool construction of fabricated parts, etc but this really doesn't seem like a re-design that should take much time to implement?

Tyne & Wear Metro Fleet Replacement: Awarded to Stadler

Seems a little unfair to declare the units as “lemons” this early in their life span. There’s always teething issues with any stock and we just need to work through them. Tbh, even in lemon state I’d take these over the metrocars a hundred times over!

Tyne & Wear Metro Fleet Replacement: Awarded to Stadler

Apologies if it was already mentioned, but what is actually causing the AC units to leak?

Ah that’ll probably be it, thanks.

Tyne & Wear Metro Fleet Replacement: Awarded to Stadler

Is there something going on with the doors in the new stock? Had a couple of trips now where the doors make the closing sound, fully close but then the train stands doing nothing for a moment. Then you hear another round of door closing tones before moving off a few seconds later.

Tyne & Wear Metro Fleet Replacement: Awarded to Stadler

I was on a busy 555 a couple of weeks ago where a tip-up seat user vacated the seat for a mum and buggy boarding the train. The mum proceeded to sit in the tip-up seat and keep the buggy blocking the central area. Seems like you just can’t plan for people!

They're certainly very narrow. Slightly amusingly one of Nexus's own videos on Facebook demonstrates how narrow those seats are (pause in the first 5 seconds and tell me if an adult could sit either side of that person) https://www.facebook.com/reel/705273432226634 The pull-down seats in the...

Tyne & Wear Metro Fleet Replacement: Awarded to Stadler

Another day of major delays due to failed units, hopefully not 555-related!

Tyne & Wear Metro Fleet Replacement: Awarded to Stadler

Slightly off-topic (perhaps not enough to start a new thread) but does anyone know what the “fleet availability issues” were yesterday causing delays all over the system?

Tyne & Wear Metro Fleet Replacement: Awarded to Stadler

Is there nowhere around there where passengers could’ve been detrained? I realise no train operator likes detraining onto tracks but an hour and a half in the heat seems unreasonable.
