Class 313 preservation schemes and updates

View from the Campbell Road bridge and 313201 was running up and down the Eastleigh site as far as the exit signal this afternoon. Unfortunately I had no camera but did anyone else see it ?

    Class 317 withdrawals.

Didnt realise they had worksplates. Where do they fit them as the sides curve down at the bottom so there doesnt seem to be any traditional chassis to bolt them to

    Class 317 withdrawals.

Its going on right now. I could see the unit from the bridge yesterday

Operations of the Waterloo-Exeter 50s (and loco diagramming in general)

I used the train from Brighton just once (2 x 33's) but as there was no loco at the buffer stops of P2, was the entire consist reversed from Hove (unlikely) or did something pilot it to the station throat and then cut off via P3 leaving the train loco to reverse the short distance to P2

    Southern Class 313 withdrawal/storage/scrapping updates

Slight Mark Twain moment but the report of 62604 (unit 212) demise yesterday were slightly premature. It was still intact this morning but has now been reduced to lots of metal pieces although the rear bogie and part of the chassis can still be discerned this evening. I expect all will be gone...

    Southern Class 313 withdrawal/storage/scrapping updates

Just 313201 and as of Friday evening a single coach 62604 from 313212. Everything else is gone. Edit to add coach 62604 from unit 212 was still there yesterday.

    Southern Class 313 withdrawal/storage/scrapping updates

Surprisingly coach 62604 from 313212 is still intact today although pillaged internally and sat on the death row line awaiting its fate.

    Southern Class 313 withdrawal/storage/scrapping updates

Slight tangent but I was wondering why the 313 horns have a very low tech mod that seems to be an old dish cloth tied on with wire. 314 and 315 images seem to have the same mod. All I can think of is that it alters the tone or decibel level or less plausibly as the cloth is white, at least...

    Southern Class 313 withdrawal/storage/scrapping updates

OK, that makes sense and I suppose if 208 was still whole then what was in the scrap area would be the remains of the held back coach 62608 from unit 216 which was broken up on the 21st then although the rest of the unit went weeks ago. The unit scrapped prior to this coach was 205 so a...

    Southern Class 313 withdrawal/storage/scrapping updates

Where did you see 216 as personal observation and as reported in RM two coaches were cut up at the end of July. The third coach (62608) had been subject of a bid to preserve a cab but this was in the end abortive and passed through the scrap process mid September.

Does anyone know what the wheelbase of a bogie of a class 313 is?

Hi, measured the bogie under the cab of a 313 and its 2600mm so wiki is correct in this case

    Southern Class 313 withdrawal/storage/scrapping updates

Nothing but twisted metal in the scrapping area last night. 313208 now lined up on death row presumably to be dealt with next week. 313206 would be next and 313215 has been moved round to the prepping area by the small shunter shed. I believe that just leaves 212 to be moved round and then...

    Gatx units off route

While I have seen the occasional red livery unit on west coastway, a journey I did out to Pevensey yesterday seemed to have a large number of Gatx units providing the service from Brighton to Ore/Eastbourne. Is this due to a shortage of Southern stock or a surplus of Gatx ?? Interestingly the...

    Should HS2 be scrapped?

Dont forget the south. Hello from Portsmouth where I believe the journey time to London hasnt improved since 1937 electrification. Approx 65 miles in 90 minutes if you are lucky

    Timetabling peculiarities

In terms of connections its as easy to change at Fareham to be honest or even Southampton as the southern and GW services obviously follow each other between Cosham and Southampton and are quite close together. Easterly direction is very easy as the Southern connection SHOULD be already waiting...

    Southern Class 313 withdrawal/storage/scrapping updates

Following on from Camerar1's report, 313217 is being cut up this week and only coach 62609 remains. A little shunting at Eastleigh today has now put 313205 on the death row line and it was being separated late this afternoon but wont probably have a date with the grim reaper until next week.

Are Groupsave tickets now accepted on Crosscountry trains?

I just looked up Banbury to Reading for 4 people at off peak times using National Rail site. Very clearly (to me) I am offered two fares. £41 on certain trains and £62.40 on all the others. Diving down then the £41 is GW and group save, the more expensive is XC. If I select my outward...

    Timetabling peculiarities

GW services on the Portsmouth to Bristol route dont serve Cosham after the 19:40 call in either direction meaning a change is needed, usually at Fareham. This skipping of the stop doesnt seem to speed up the service so what purpose does it serve ?
