Bolton (Greater Manchester) to either Ipswich/Colchester

My other half and I (no railcards) are hoping to visit some friends who live fairly close to Ipswich/Colchester and have said either station is fine. We're going down on 14 January returning 16 January. Times are flexible. We could take either a full or half day off work on the Friday. Coming...

    TPE Configuraition

As has been stated there is no way other than to check for the yellow coloured coupler as the train approaches. The theory that first class is always at one end is not true. As a daily commuter on TransPennine North I can confirm first class can be either end. This morning it was at the...

Train hit person south of Preston

The newspaper article linked earlier indicates the incident happened at Leyland station. Whilst I was immersed in my headphones at the time of the incident, the strong braking, occuring at a time when the train was already slowing down, lead to the train reaching a full stop just south of the...

Train hit person south of Preston

I was travelling on the Pacer in question. I caught it at Bolton. The delayed 7:35 to Blackpool North. Just south of Ribble bridge on approach to Preston we came to a sharp halt. Guard told us we'd hit somone and driver badly shaken. Around 70 mins after coming to rest we rolled into Preston.

    Lostock or Lostock Parkway?

I fully appreciate I'm being pedantic here and there's far more important issues currently but it seems within the GMPTE area, the station referred to in timetables as "Lostock" and signage at the station itself agrees with this, GMPTE calling displays always refer to it as "Lostock Parkway". In...

    Rail firms' phantom first-class carriages

I, for one, agree with the general thrust of the news article. It's all well and good those with a far more intricate understanding of the railway knowing that such and such a service will normally be a class whatever train which does or does not include first class accommodation etc. But for...

Preston to Portsmouth Harbour via 3 stops

Thanks for the heads up their Gus. Just what exactly is megatrain then? I've had a look at their website and as far as I can gather, in respect of the above, it's a special carriage on an otherwise normal SWT service. Is it normally full of screaming kids and those travelling on the cheap...

Preston to Portsmouth Harbour via 3 stops

No. Off to the continent. --- old post above --- --- new post below --- No particular times. Prefer avoid peak times. Ideally leave late morning apart from last morning when an earlier start maybe needed. Thanks for the other suggestions. Hadn't realised one ticket would do the 4 day...

Preston to Portsmouth Harbour via 3 stops

My Mother, a Senior Railcard holder, is planning on visiting some family and friends on her way down to the ferry terminal at Portsmouth Harbour. She's planning on leaving Preston on Wednesday 9 June and staying the night in Walsall. The next day she's wanting to travel to Carterton (Oxford...

    Nat Rail Deps/arrival boards

The train whereabouts indicator feature is available on the over-priced NRE iPhone app. The indicator feature is only reliable where the infrastructure exists. For example I can see when a train leaves Blackpool North but until the train reaches Preston the indicator suggests the train is near...

    TPE not getting franchise extension?

I'm a daily commuter between Bolton and Preston. 99% of the time I catch the 0759 fTPE Bolton to Preston (which is actually the Manchester Airport to Edinburgh service). Coming back, 99% of the time I catch the 1710 or 1747 fTPE Preston to Bolton. I can confidently say that in the 4 years or...

    Bolton to Durham

Did that previously. Cheapest I can see is £38 single going out mid-morning not the £27 you found. I presume these cheaper tickets are no more? F

    Bolton to Durham

Thanks for the info so far. Neither of us qualify for any form of discounts as we're both of working age (33 and 38). I did go through the FTPE website and chose only FTPE services I thought. I'll try East Coast's matrix thing tonight and see what it comes up with. Thanks to those who...

    Bolton to Durham

Any advice gratefully received. 2 adults travelling from Bolton to Durham departing mid-morning to lunch on Easter Sunday (4 April) and departing Durham mid-afternoon on Easter Tuesday (6 April). £75 all in seems the best "normal" way of booking via Trainline etc via FTPE. F

    Pendolinos pantograph

Noticed a pendo at Preston couple of days ago with rear pantograph raised and thought it odd. Understand why now.

    Prep procedure... 153/5/8s

There's also a thread in this forum somewhere all about the different eco-mode phases. I remember copy and pasting some info I found. My daily commute between Preston and Bolton 99.9% of the time involves 185s both ways. I tend to catch and Edinburgh-bound service in the morning which stops...

Which platform will my train depart from - iPhone functionality

Apologies if this has been mentioned elsewhere. As iPhone/iPod Touch users will know, National Rail's own idevice app costs a staggering five of your whole British pounds and whilst in my opinion very user friendly, easy to use and offering good functionality, the thought of paying a fiver...

Further Electrification in the North West - Details announced

As a Lancastrian it's refreshing to learn of continued investment in infrastructure out of the home counties. Mind you, still can't paper over the years of under or nil investment up here. As a daily commuter on the Bolton to Preston stretch I have been enjoying that rare sight these last...

    Level crossing justice

If you're going to have an accident do it behind the wheel. Motoring sentences are extremely lenient. How many times do we hear of drunk drivers killing innocent people or joyriders skidding off into innocent pedestrians. If they get 4 years it's a miracle.
