Thanks WZ, knew what you meant about the rubber tyres. We're now looking at tram size wheels based on your earlier suggestion, so thanks again for that.
Our train is actually much much lighter than I thought possible on todays latest calculations, looking at between 25-30% of normal weight...
The french metro used to have rubber tyres too. I think rubber will be far too soft for what we would be looking at; rail contact area is small and would wear down very quickly. Thinking more of a carbon composite...
WSP sounds crucial. We are just working on the weights and forces at the moment.
We're having to design top down, which is probably a bit unusual, the brakes are the last piece. This is because we have had to work around the power system which is fixed in size and weight.

Good points, we should be ok with the bearings and we use 'traction control' on the motors for acceleration. We haven't worked out the braking yet;-) . Needs to go from 260mph max to 0. Some form of regenerative braking is to be incorporated. Maybe an ABS can be included, a question for next...
Thanks WZ, that answers my question. We can fit 600mm into the design. The hydrogen train is less than 50% in mass (weight) than conventional trains and has a very low centre of gravity. Smaller wheels may mean that they will wear down quicker but hopefully this will be balanced by the reduced...

Thanks for all your help! Bombardier was the name I was trying to think of. Our hydrogen train is at least 4 to 5 years off production, it is worth pursuing though as it broadly fits in with the rest of the projects we are carrying out. cheers HST-Dave
cool, just looked up CSRE on net -could be a good contact, although it does look like production is in China.
Preferably the first prototype should be made in UK so we can quickly make changes in the design to optimise assembly etc. and we need a manufacturers' expertise for 3rd party...

.. agree, sounds like compressor motors/pumps on air con and/or brakes.. The loco hauled Norwich - London trains also have the additional noise of 'flat spots' on wheels, last couple of journeys it were like they had square wheels on the carriage I was in.

I often use the DLR in London and the same is true there. I always buy a ticket, most people do. Saying that I seldom see a guard/conductor and the stations are mostly open access...
The DLR is quite weird and clever, a cross between a train and a fair ground ride:D
That's my undersanding too. They had 57005 (formerly 47350) and 57006 (formerly 47187), plus 47375 (sold on) and 47237, (the latter now with an engine fault?).
