Hi. A quick question.
Does anyone know when the last loco or train that was wholly UK designed, tested and constructed using UK parts and UK skills/labour was built, and by a UK company?
I'm not having a go at current manufacturers/companies, just need the info for a general business...
Thanks yorksrob, the photo is just how I remember them. It's nice to see one with clean windows, most I remember had years of smoking residue on them (smoked glass:-)
They were good old trains:-)

Thanks Matt, for link.
Now, if those handles had the centres cut out , i.e. so you can put your fingers thro, for added grip, then they'll be just right imho. ;-)
Dave
cool, another good site.
Must have been EPBs, although I do remember coming home from London Bridge c1979, the train was packed and I had a load of student books/folders with me, the guard kindly let me in to the guards storage room/area. Inside the room there was no internal lining and the...
Thanks Pendolino.. perhaps they were. I've still got all my old train-spotting books with the exact details but they are stored away in boxes somewhere.
I was more into diesels at the time so just took the EMUs to go to the North, West and East mainline London Stations. 37s were my favorite...
.. not sure they were 415s, I thought they were on lines to the south e.g. Bromley..
we were on the Bexleyheath or occasionally the Sidcup line. I seem to remember spotting 5705 as it was also a lyric in a song at the time:-)
and they did a 2car version so as well as 4's you could have a 4+2...
Just a quick question.
I used to spend my childhood in the 70's on the Dartford/CX EMUs. Can anyone confirm their class number ? was it class 501 stock? I remember they were made of wood and were quite old.
cheers Dave
MCR, they're not real handles, they look more like teddy bear ears :-)
I think I'm just against vertical poles cause I'm very tall (and top heavy) and seem to bang into them;-)
:-) Dave
MCR, I was thinking of little handles on the top of each seat...maybe not as practical but more pleasing to the eye maybe;-)
oh.. and the odd dangly thingy from the roof like on tube trains:-)
..Dave
swt, well, they've certainly tried hard to improve it. Not sure about all the handrails, but I guess they will be expecting alot of standing passengers and people walking when train moves... cheers.. Dave
KingFisher, cool link, thanks, it certainly looks more spacious. I guess in theory all the seats could be made to tip up (like at cinema) or at least the ones on the inner corridor path..
2+3 is a definate no go;-)
Dave
The new intercity 125 replacements (part of the DfT programme) look likely to be electro-diesel too. The HST class 43 being withdrawn as the replacements come on-line.
A solution to passenger congestion e.g. embarking/disembarking at the same time and getting in each others way? and/or passengers knocking into already seated passengers?
maybe it isn't a problem afterall and is an accepted part of the travelling experience :-)
I see embarking/disembarking mentioned in another thread and it appears to be a common issue with train travellers, espescially commuters. Is there a solution that can be incorporated in new train design?
My experiences at regular commuting were with the SR slam shut doors in the 80's. Note - I...
Thanks Kingfisher, will take a look. I think I may be getting infront of myself here, we're still 4 to 5 years off from a full scale 22m/unit proto. We've only just finished the fuel-cell specs today and updating drawings to fit. I think we will need your help in a couple of months time;-)
For...
It's light but low profile. We have surplus kW power available so was thinking maybe electro-magnetic attraction to rails can be used in acceleration and braking..
Thanks for confirming that this has been used; in your mail Kingfisher, it is very helpful, and it looks like that is where the...
That's very interesting, we had 1.1m and had to step down into train, 915mm or lower would be ideal for the present design.. 550mm seems incredibly low but is more in line with our floor level. We'll have to go for 915mm I think as it is expected to be a suburban/rural train.

P.S. Tram...
