TRIVIA: Major road junctions where you have to turn off to continue on the original road

Split from this thread. https://www.railforums.co.uk/threads/trivia-junctions-where-the-branch-is-straight-on-and-the-main-is-around-the-corner.290458/ M25 / M26 at Sevenoaks

Driving well below the speed limit

I’m really grumpy today so forgive this in advance if it touches a nerve. Why do people drive well below the permitted speed limit, even in good conditions, with clear visibility, and no hazards? I’m talking sub 40mph on a 60mph road, or 20mph on a 30mph road. I have mentioned before the...

Unusual move at Watford Junction 8 Jan

A freind of mine was on 9G46, 2106 Euston - Wolves last night. Although it departed Euston 8 minutes late and fractionally ahead of the down Highlander (1S25), it was evidently held on Camden Bank and the Highlander went first. Most likely because the Highlander had been signalled out early just...

Where are the engines in the 74s?

So here we are again, a month into the new registrations - 74 plate this time - and I have yet to see a 74 plate car with an engine. I must have now seen around 50 x 74 plate cars, and they are all EVs. This isn’t just a ‘home counties’ thing, I’ve been all over the country this month: London...

    Disruption threads

This has been niggling at me for a while, and today something occurred that triggered me to start this thread. There are often threads started on the forum about disruptive events as they happen. Sometimes they are quite large events - pretty much every OLE problem on the ECML or track fault...

    Paris 2024 Olympics

Thought I’d start a thread on the greatest sporting event of the year. But let’s be honest. The opening ceremony has been truly awful.

    Where are the 73s ?

No, this isn’t a thread about Southern Electro Diesels, but I do hope the click bait worked. We are now almost through September, and despite being out on the roads on average for a couple of hours a day, I have seen only 5 x “73” plate new cars, ie those registered since the 1st...

Could we get to the point of being required to hold a valid ticket before travelling. No excuses

Moderator note: Split from https://www.railforums.co.uk/threads/aslef-scotland-wanting-to-do-away-with-doo.241067 I also think we should fairly soon get to the point of being required to hold a valid ticket before travelling. No excuse in this day and age, frankly.

RMT Extends Strike Action on Network Rail to Dec 24-27

Mod Note: A number of posts have been moved from this thread. Posts #1 - #25 were originally in the linked thread, all posts from #41 onwards were in this thread, posts #26 - #40 were posted in both threads so may be slightly confused following merging. More strikes announced.

Non rail related tunnels below London.

mods note. Split from this thread Well this is nonsense! You might be confusing it with the tunnel from the Houses of Parliament to Portcullis House, the latter of which is sat atop the Westminster station box dug for the jubilee line. I imagine that the tunnel cost rather less than 0.5% of...

    One shell of a delay

Surprised no one has posted about this. It’s right up there with the most weird and unbelievable reasons for delays to trains! https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-norfolk-62377928 please, no jokes about the tortoise being delayed by trains…

Perpetual motion - Infinity train (Australia)

I wondered when this would happen somewhere in the world, and here it is! https://www.railtech.com/rolling-stock/2022/03/04/australian-mining-company-works-on-infinity-train-using-gravity-to-regenerating-batteries/?gdpr=accept

    Axle Counters vs Track Circuits

moderator note: split from https://www.railforums.co.uk/threads/transpennine-route-upgrade-and-electrification-updates-cp6.88054/ the other way round. Axle counters generally better, and only in service in a big way in this country for the last 30 years or so.

    Luton Airport redevelopment

Luton Airport* today launched a statutory consultation on their proposals for redeveloping the airport, to accommodate 32 million passengers a year. The plans include minor extensions to the existing terminal, a brand new Terminal 2, significant changes to the airfield (new taxiways etc)...

Future electric storage solutions for renewables.

mods note - split from this thread:https://www.railforums.co.uk/threads/treasury-blocking-electrification-plans.225908/ Yes it does. The limit on power capacity (as opposed to energy capacity) is the generation rating of the turbines at Dinorwig, Ffestiniog, Cruachan and Foyers.

Could we see more examples of Better bus / rail integration?

In the (many) threads about reopening old railways, there are many suggestions that a far more effective use of cash would be to make bus / rail integration better, with through ticketing, better connections etc. Transport for Wales seem to have done just that for one of the ‘old chestnut’...

    A380s coming back

Apparently BA are bringing 4 A380s back into service from December. However to get crew familiarisation, they will be on short haul routes (Madrid and Frankfurt) from next month. Cheap and easy way to get a Super Jumbo trip in...

How could MML line speeds be improved? (e.g. by using tilt)

Moderator note: Split from https://www.railforums.co.uk/threads/mml-electrification-updates.110445/ Ultimately the MML is beset with curves, and the only way to get more speed on them now is tilt. I still have a secret hope that the Pendolinos have a few years on the MML when HS2 replaces them.
