I suppose the question has to be asked, does the National Grid (transmission system) have sufficient capacity to be be able to cope with 're-filling' storage systems on a good power generating day (eg during Storm Arwen) even when demand on a day like Storm Arwen is satisfied, its been said on here that sometimes operators of wind turbines have been paid not to supply to the grid but clearly when the wind blows or the sun shines or the tides are good we need to be ready to collect said power regardless of actual demand at any given time for its use.

I wasn't just thinking of just those but 30million 'batteries' (I think you quoted but can't find it right now) and other future storage schemes that may well be needed.

It depends. There is a limit to how much energy can be transmitted via the network (both local and national). If both the energy source and the storage systems are distributed across the network, that’s not a big problem.

If however, the energy sources are far from the storage systems, then there maybe a problem.

In terms of the available energy to charge up the battery storage systems, the idea is to do this overnight when the overall demand is the lowest of the 24 hour day.

Is this going to be the case in future, with tens of millions of batteries wanting to charge overnight?

In about 3 years, they will be charging up in the day when there’s a surfeit of wind.

They do use most of the same data, but there is definitely wind missing from Gridwatch. Also they account for exports differently - I think Drax counts export as extra demand, whereas Gridwatch doesn’t.
Apparently the Drax data for wind includes an estimated figure for unmetered wind turbines whereas on Gridwatch this will only show as a reduction in demand. Either way wind production is pretty negligible this morning.

Do any of the current models of EVs have invertors that are capable of synchronising with grid frequency and voltage? If so what sort of efficiency do they achieve?
