I will ignore your us of the pejorative "Remoaner", I voted remain but accept we will leave.
As you say when the RoI gained independence people were free to cross the border without passport checks or visas.
When the UK leaves the EU people will almost certainly still be able to do this, it is...
Why do you keep talking about freedom of movement and the NI border? It is the movement of goods which requires a hard border. There was a hard border with customs etc before the EU custom union and single market.
The NI border problem is nothing to do with free of movement of people. It is about the movement of goods across the border and that was always a problem. I was brought up near the border and have memories of being stopped at Pettigo on our way to Donegal and also burnt out custom posts.
Unless the NI border is sorted then No-Deal is a real possibility. Contrary to what many believe the EU is desperate to do a deal but know RoI could veto anything which comprises the GFA. The RoI also want a deal as the economic consequences of no Deal are pretty bad for them, on the other hand...
The No Deal and pay nothing Brexit would indeed be bad for the EU but it would be catastrophic for the UK and cost our economy considerable more than £39 billion - Carney said today in a Cabinet meeting it would be similar to the 2008 crash with cost the UK economy up to £7 trillion (£7,000...
If the next election is in 2022, I doubt if Corbyn will still be in charge of Labour. At 72 he will be getting on a bit and will have finished purging the Blairites from the party.
I am a Labour voter and member and in both leadership recent elections have voted ABC*.
Not because of any of...
Accomplished?
As London Mayor
he made London's housing shortage worse
His handling of the riots was dreadful
He bought water cannons that the police couldn't use
Cable car
Garden Bridge
Estuary Airport
His record as Foreign Secretary wasn't great, a few gaffes for you
Made a joke about the...
It is not the EU who are stopping us leaving. It is the warring Tory party. The EU will happily give us a Canada deal as long as we honour the Good Friday Agreement and put no barriers on the NI border.
Problem is Tories want incompatible things.
Soft Leavers and Remainers want too leave CU...
Boris is very smart in some areas, in other areas he isn't half as smart as he likes to think he is.
Some of his decisions as London Mayor demonstrate this - London Garden Bridge - he seems to lack the ability to concentrate on details (Something Teresa has to a fault) and assumes problems can...
Under the old YYY 999X and X999 YYY formats I and Z were both used for Northern Irish cars (exclusively I think) with a different format XXX 9999.
I bought a car in my home county of Fermanagh with a number starting FIL - When I was living in London I was confused when "garage neighbours" at...
Just to add re NI border, there were only ever 3 options:
Impose a hard customs border on the NI border
Impose a customs border in the Irish sea
Stay in the Customs Union.
My understanding is that the government has legislation in the pipeline that make 2 and 3 illegal. Option 1 was been...
Yes, apologies it was exaggeration that strayed into hyperbole. No I wasn't talking about selling illegally in a pub and I admit trading over powered vacuum cleaners is unlikely however it was a EU standard everyone is aware of and there would be nothing to stop someone shipping and selling...
Goods are the problem. A very simplistic scenario after: Brexit I import 10,000 watt vacuums from the USA, which are now allowed here following a UK-US trade agreement. I can't ship them to the EU via Dover as (once they have cleared the queues) they will be picked up by EU customs at the new...
I am a Spurs fan, so disappointment is in my DNA!
I should have said New Yorkers were much more friendly than I expected. From the Homeland Security guy on passport control who are usually notoriously grumpy to the lovely lady at the top of the Empire State Building everyone was very welcoming.
Thought I would write a review of a recent trip to New York and Montreal, which included taking the Amtrack Adirondack service.
For information I am a 6'+ wheelchair user with a spinal cord injury using a self propelled wheelchair and was travelling with my wife and daughter.
Although this is...
Maybe people born in the 40's, 50's and 60's are more likely to be right wing - influenced by the portrayal of 70's as a decade of disaster due to Labour government - people born later are left wing due to portrayal of 80's as a decade of disaster due to Tory government.
It is interesting that...
Yes, the UK has a seat at the WTO, successor of GATT, but it does not have a Schedule. The Schedule has to be agreed by the other members, we submitted a schedule and 7 countries have already raised objections. Negotiations to agree this can take up to 10 years.
