Can/should TOCs notify service alterations via NRE?

I'm in the middle of a bit of a dispute with Southern Trains. Basically this relates to an incident where I and others wanted to take bikes on the train to return home after a cycle ride. Unfortunately this coincided with the London-Brighton cycle ride and for that day Southern had a one-off...

NRE mobile site - what happened to it?

There used to be a "PDA" version of National Rail Enquiries which was pretty stripped down; didn't give you many options but it loaded quickly and gave you the basic info. Then as far as I remember, a year or two it was updated to a slightly slicker version, but still a pared down version of...

South London Line: the "Atlantic Lines"

On the South London Line between Wandsworth Road and Peckham there are two sets of running lines. I gather the southernmost pair (ie, the pair on the right if you are heading from Wandsworth Rd to Peckham, and the pair which pass through the platforms at Clapham High Street and go over the...

    Steam train "gauging issues"...?

What does this actually mean? I've noticed it given as a reason for re-routing of tours sometimes - I can understand that certain locations might have gauge problems for certain vehicles, but why should such a problem crop up only once the tour is underway? Also, was booked to go on the...

    Railways of Albania - video

http://youtu.be/6OpIHgK_qz0 This is a very late follow-up to the thread here about my trip to Albania in 2010. Have only just got round to uploading this brief bit of video. I would have tacked it on the end of my other thread but it's been closed. Maybe if a moderator is reading this...

    NRE not showing cheapest fare

Correct me if I've got something wrong here but... If I look up a single London-Brighton for Saturday (with Network Railcard) the cheapest fare I'm offered is a super off peak day return at £6.60. Same for the reverse journey on Sunday. So going there on Sat and back on Sun costs 2 x 6.60...

"The Kent Armistice Day Special" (routeing?)

This was originally advertised as Victoria - Margate but has been changed to Waterloo - Deal - K Olympia. The outward timings here http://www.uksteam.info/tours/t11/t1111a.htm show it leaving Waterloo at 1103 and passing Nunhead at 1117. Does that mean it's going to use the old Eurostar...

Guildford to Denmark Hill - any permitted

Guildford is a routeing point. The routeing points for Denmark Hill are Clapham Junction, Peckham Rye, Herne Hill and London Group. If I have an any permitted ticket Guildford-Denmark Hill, are either of the following routes valid? 1) Guildford - Waterloo [underground] Elephant & Castle...

Thameslink line - ECS moves during closures?

The Thameslink line south of Blackfriars is closed at nights and most weekends at the moment, supposedly due to the work going on at Blackfriars preventing cross-London running. But I see quite a few ECS moves running through Loughborough Junction during the night. Generally heading towards...

"Train doors may close 30 seconds before departure" - what a nonsense

It's becoming more and more common to see these notices stating that train doors will be closed 30 seconds, or a minute, or whatever, before departure. This makes no sense to me. What is the purpose of a timetable? It's to let you know when you need to be on the platform to catch your...

Train headlamps...is there any consistent standard?

I would have added this onto this thread: http://www.railforums.co.uk/showthread.php?t=24730 but it's been closed for some reason. 1. In that thread there is talk of "night" and "day" lamps, and mention that often only one lamp is used. But most trains I see have either 2 or 3 lamps on the...

Optimum time to buy advance tickets

I used to go on the assumption that as far as advance tickets are concerned, the earlier you buy them the better. But sometimes it seems that cheaper tickets are released closer to the time (perhaps not very often but I'm sure it happens sometimes). I'm just wondering if anyone's looked into...

Is it just me or is the DRS livery really rubbish?

The background blue isn't very nice, the logo is tacky and over-complicated, the typeface is unattractive. Class 37s and the like deserve a little more dignity than this, do they not? As it's a state-owned company, couldn't they just paint everything in BR large logo blue?
