How does the cost of elevated rail running above the street compare to tunneling? Even if it is cheaper would they ever explore the cost of extending in further into central London as an el?
I suppose people tend to hate elevated rail in city centres away as it darkens the streets and creates...
I imagine that Ware will require significant work as that's currently single track. Especially if EWR's lofty (and unlikely) Stanstead connection is to go anywhere.
I can't imagine what the benefits of it beying just a tube line will be other than saving a bit building the tunnel portals and connections, especially since the option to run to Stanstead would exist with option b.
The safeguarded route doesn't really make any sense today.
I can't believe it...
I very much doubt a 21st Century British Rail would even slightly resemble the 20th Century one so I think the invoking of how things were done before should be discarded...it doesn't seem very useful to me other than a lesson of how not to do things.
Perhaps a more natural solution would be...
One immediate problems would be the distinct lack of an M25 shaped brownfield site on which to build a railway. Another is the lack of money to build it. And a third would be the fact that a train cannot just switch to another line as the commuter lines out of London are some of the most heavily...
Zero sympathy for FCC. All too tired of being crammed into four coach trains with barely any room t stand when trying to get into London on a Saturday or Sunday because it's loaded with football fans going to Finsbury Park. It's things like that are infuriating. And that cannot be blamed on...
Fantastic news! I grew up holidaying in Swanage every year and riding that railway, and am so happy to hear that it will be possible to make the journey all the way from my home town by train to see family there.
Seems a bit odd not to have the line connect to the ECML at Ally Pally - not because theirs loads of capacity north to run GNR through services after Thameslink, but just for providing an operational route from the ECML to SWML for stock movements etc..
Yeah, true, I guess TfL has a precedent for operating outside of London already on the Met and Central line as it is.
If they want control of the new super Thameslink/Southern franchise too the closest model would be the RER I suppose.
Can we really see London Overground trains running to Dartford, Hertford, and Welwyn Garden City though?
They're at least going to have to come up with some new colours other than orange, anyway...
16 cars is fine for Amtrak...not so fine for the UK. To increase capacity more the only think that can be done is to introduce double tecker trains which in itself will require makes changes across the network (but probably not more much than 16 car platform extensions...), or to simply build...
Had a look last night and the connection to the Canal Tunnels to the MML isn't build yet from what I could see. The provisional timetable for work to be done is as follows:
ECML 2037 points – Week 01 (Easter 2013)
ECML 2033 Points – Week 09 (26 May – 31 May 2013)
MML – Canal Tunnel Junction –...
Just seems like good sense to me, given that in 5 years time the station could be buried in the depths of a skyscraper with no chance of platform lengthening if it is ever required.
Yes, they've begun to make preparations for the fitting out it seems. At the portal near the ECML junction-to-be it looks like a large JCB is being used to clear the embankment between the tunnel and the ECML trackbed.
Canonbury curve would indeed need widening. It would be possible to run Overground trains to Finsbury Park off peak but, yeah, there's no scope for any major new services.
All well and good if you can back that up with some numbers, but I think if were were to map of the data of rail investments as a function of population-movement-density the weighting towards London wouldn't be that unfair, as others have implied.
Unfortunately the money goes where the people...
Indeed it will, depending on the scheme chosen it will either stop at a station called Euston-St Pancras (which I suppose will create a large underground complex between Kings Cross and Euston) or it will stop at Euston and Kings Cross-St Pancras, and this is to create the capacity to handle...
The crossrail trip accross London from Stratford to Heathrow is certainly not trivial. Why build a railway saving 70 minutes of journey time from Manchester only to add 42 minutes back on to it by necessitating a trip back across the city to Heathrow?
The trip from Old Oak Common would only be...
