Why was the station built in a "box" but on a viaduct? It looks ugly.

I believe it was to allow for future building on top of it not to force the station to close. Least that's what I read somewhere.

Because the long term plan was to build a building around it and building the box then meant the railway wouldn't be affected later on. The financial situation has meant the building plans are stalled.
Interesting they made provision for 8 car platforms in the station box.......

Just take a look at how the city has spread over the throat at Liverpool St. All very Subterranean these days. The railways around London know what a magnate their stations are for business & it only makes sense to plan to cream even more money by building upwards too.

Just seems like good sense to me, given that in 5 years time the station could be buried in the depths of a skyscraper with no chance of platform lengthening if it is ever required.

Fr once they were thinking ahead when they built the station. One day ELL loading will require longer 8 car trains.

But they didn't think about putting up any decent signage or having an actual entrance/exit in the aforementioned High Street. Its a good few minutes extra walk to the current entrance in a particularly dark and dank side street.
The main reason for calling the station Shoreditch High Street was to distinguish its location from the old East London Line Shoreditch station which was not in the same place. The signage is not wonderful but is not that bad. I suspect many of the problems result from a lack of desire to spend too much on what might prove to be "temporary" facilities (not the platforms etc) which may have to be modified/rebuilt to fit the ultimate building design.

Amazing to think there was actually some forward thinking which I agree with but it isn't a pretty sight having to look at it all day from my desk!
Not sure how this affects future plans but Powerleague are opening 8 x 5 a side and 2 x 7 a side pitches on the land opposite the entrance to the station.
Does anyone know if there are plans to develop the area between The Light Bar and Worship street where the old 5 a side pitches and driving range used to be? Seem likely the railway will be built over and it'll form an extention of The City at some point.

Powerleague are there on a short lease, and will be moved on when the development comes to fruition
Development in the Worship St area is called Principal Place and is consented. Hammerson recently sold it on to Brookfield
