As I understand it - the rather bizzare situation is that the train runs Victoria - Gatwick as Gatwick Express, hence as per the signs you can buy your Victoria to Gatwick ticket on board. However, on arrival at Gatwick it essentially becomes a Southern service from Gatwick to Brighton and...
With regards to the middle seat on 3+2 being used / not used, I think it even varies by service.
The service that I take daily (Portsmouth / Southampton to Victoria and back again) the middle seats seem to be very seldom used. (Although I tend to be in the front of the 377 which is 2+2 with...
Personally I think one improvement could be going back to 2+2 in every coach! The aisles are so narrow on 3+2 377s for instance that it takes people much longer to walk down within the carriages.
This is especially bad as people also seem to prefer to stand than use the middle seat of the "3"...
It's mostly the refurbished 313s in their new Southern Coastway livery now I think. As long as it keeps the 313s off any route I actually use, im happy.
I do think it's a useful service though. My train in the evening is Victoria to Portsmouth/Southampton splitting at Horsham, and for the...
I agree about making people change at ECR for their choice of London Terminal (although I think we only have one London Bridge service from Chichester the 06:59 which I sometimes take if I have to be in the City so I think to an extent it happens already, certainly most places have a primary...
I was just posting about this in the HS2 topic.
Certainly I would love the Southern region sped up but you can understand the problems with it. On my peak time service its not about number of stops, its solely about capacity and line speed restriction I think.
The calling pattern is (06:29)...
I have never been the biggest fan of HS2, perhaps it's just a case of jealousy in the face of the fact that my journey from Chichester to Victoria a distance of around 60 miles takes me a less than impressive 1:35 on the fastest services.
Not that I want High Speed rail for the South coast of...
I was under the impression that the track and the services had to be seperate by EU directive. Even in France/Germany where its still state owned they have to nominally split up the two parts into two companies.
The Southern trains I use running from London Bridge to Tattenham Corner (usually a class 455 or 456) do have adverts on the inside, small posters at the ends of the coaches.
I am also interested in ORCATS. On finding out my season ticket is valid on more routes than I thought it raises some anomalies. I dont really understand the system so I apologise if I am spouting absolute nonsense
My monthly season ticket is subject to a 20% discount due to being a member of...
A little bit off topic, but this has reminded me, quite often getting off my train in the morning I see a Turbostar at East Croydon - running err... over the third rail. Over the past week or so seen one heading North on platform 3 and one heading South on platform 6, cant remember the exact...
From a personal perspective I think that both parties are at fault.
If you have a ticket from A-B, then you can just show it, if you don't then you can say as people above have mentioned "I'm getting a lift there" or even something vague like "I'll be there later today".
But I think that...
I bought my first ticket before I had my Easit photocard, and the ticket did not change at all. The Route is described as "Any Permitted"
As far as the Easit discount goes I dont think it affects the ticket at all, as long as I can convince the sales person to actually apply the discount to...
Thanks for your responses especially John, really great information. I'll definitely have a look at the national routeing guide.
I had already lengthened my Chichester - Kingswood ticket to Chichester - Tattenham Corner for the same logic as you proposed for Havant. I'll definitely look into...
Sorry for so many queries in a short time, but I have found your guys advice in the past really useful and have come up with another one!
I travel regularly for work from Chichester - Kingswood using a Chichester - Tattenham Corner season ticket. (Route Chichester - E Croydon via Horsham, E...
If your potential employer in Kingswood is the same as my current employer in Kingswood (L&G) (which I think is extremely likely as L&G apart its not exactly a hive of commercial activity) then afaik they will reimburse basic (ie not first class) costs of getting to the interview.
I'm not...
Hi thanks to everyone was so helpful about my questions on Season ticket eligibility. I've been reading your forums alot since I found you. I've always loved trains and since being a commuter I've rekindled my interest which had lapsed slightly. I'm back for more advice, and hope you can help...
Thanks again for the responses guys. Interesting Stuff.
A couple of points of interest.
I tried my ticket out in the barriers at East Croydon today, and as some above have predicted it was not recognised. Not a problem as of course staff will let me through but a minor annoyance as there are...
Thanks again!
I do have an oyster card, and the train I'm currently getting in the morning is a rather strange service (06:59 from Chichester) which runs Southampton Central - London Bridge adding more carriages at Barnham and running slow up the Arun Valley line as opposed to every other...
Thanks alot for the swift responses guys. Very helpful as I need to renew the ticket on Monday.
One more point (I'm sure you get alot of queries about permitted routes). Occassionally I will have to go into the companies central London office. I assume that London Bridge / London Victoria are...
