If the railways need more money why don't we see billboards at smaller stations and paid for adverts painted on the sides of trains like we do with buses?

I know at New Malden in Surrey, the old island platform (disused for many years) has been kept intact with billboards on it, see:

This is not done at any other stations that I can think of in similar positions that (for example Esher), but if New Malden alone brings in enough money SWT/NR etc, who's complaining?

About your point on advertising l trains, I think there is sufficient space inside trains and on stations for adverts, these being more advantageous on trains than on buses, and if, for example, you can get a 40-strong fleet of stock and put four adverts for something on each train, I would have thought that this was enough to satisfy possible profits too, I find this especially common on the longer units in the Southern Region.

I know Southeastern and maybe SWT advertise on the trains, Southern dont however.

Although doing just advertising on most trains inside would be a good source of income for a TOC, maybe an all-over wrap like GX have done.

If there's any stations without advertising billboards, it'll be because no-one has deemed it worth paying to put adverts there...

Buses spend a lot of time going slow/stopped in areas with lots of people around them. Trains tend to be going much faster and in town are typically on rights of way that aren't so visible. This makes the sides of them less valuable as advertising space- though from time to time some do get advertising liveries.

The stations that see billboards are those with frequent services, the ones with less frequent services where people wait around for longer tend not to have billboards.

Surely the obvious place for these would be inside the trains? As on tube trains.

The Southern trains I use running from London Bridge to Tattenham Corner (usually a class 455 or 456) do have adverts on the inside, small posters at the ends of the coaches.

Just a few stations down the line, Walton-on-Thames does the same.
