Please can someone tell me the cheapest from York - Kingswood to arrive by 16.00 on 15 November and to depart Kingswood after 18.00 the same day. 1 adult no railcard. I get £87 from National Rail. Thanks in advance.

That's a lot of travelling for a short stay! The cheapest advance tickets at £77.40, with plenty of services to chose from.

For £69.80 you could get an off-peak day return to Newark stations (£26.80) and an off-peak day Newark stations to London Zones 1-6 Travelcard (£43). Your York > London trains must stop at Newark and there are some off-peak restrictions. The East Coast journey planner can confirm which trains it is valid on, and it seems to fit your journey. You should be OK using it on the 12:00 from York (arrive Kingswood @ 16:02) and on the 17:57 from Kingswood (change for the 19:33 from Kings Cross, and again at Doncaster for the 21:39, arriving 22:01).

Are you sure that whoever you're interviewing for won't cover your expenses? Depends on the job but usually travel to the interview will be reimbursed.

Just thought it might be worth checking before splitting too much as it might complicate things if you can claim it back.

GC are more expensive than splitting with EC. GC management are aware of this but don't want to act on it. It's a shame because really we should be recommending GC for this sort of journey.

If someone splits tickets between York & London GC get no ORCATS revenue for the tickets (but GC are still obliged to accept such passengers if they hold a Season ticket for part of their journey).

I don't think GC's own ticket price is going to affect ORCATS revenue (except, if less GC only tickets are sold, more Any Permitted tickets are sold therefore they get slightly more through ORCATS but far less directly, so a false economy).

For day trips from stations on the GC route to London it is cheaper to use EC and split tickets than it is to use GC (and I know people who at weekends are particularly creative with ticketing on this route with regard to split tickets).

If your potential employer in Kingswood is the same as my current employer in Kingswood (L&G) (which I think is extremely likely as L&G apart its not exactly a hive of commercial activity) then afaik they will reimburse basic (ie not first class) costs of getting to the interview.

I'm not guaranteeing they will but I can see on the expense code that they are supposed to, and one of my new colleagues got his air fare from Ireland reimbused.

Obviously you still may as well get the cheapest ticket I suppose, but I would be optimistic that the company would reimburse you (although not certain)
