Does any of this explain why the stopper out of Leeds is regularly shown as being up to 7 mins late approaching Dewsbury, giving unwary passengers the idea they have time to nip to the loo or go for a very swift half, only for the train to trundle in smack on time?

Your ticket was indeed valid. I got quite addicted to HS1 with mine.
Would it not make more sense to run these loco hauls on less well used lines and use the freed up units to strengthen these packed services. That would keep the cranks away from the shoppers/whatever.

I wanted to add this journey to my Northern £10 ticket at the weekend and found.
Anytime Return - Preston to Lancaster = £8.60
Off-Peak - PRE to LAN = £88.00
More than 10x the price.
(Just checked and the £88 is for a multiday Rover ticket):oops:
But surely they will soon have to extend the platforms northwards anyway, so that I don't have to walk so far to the first class carriages. At the moment it is practically a taxi ride away from the station building

I plumped for £9.55 advances to and from Euston together with a £33 off peak return Paddington to Bruton. Total £52.10.
Bonus of 2 then 2 1/2 hours in that there London.
Advice would be appreciated in getting the best deal for:
Huddersfield to Gillingham(Dorset) or Castle Carey or Bruton.
