Advice would be appreciated in getting the best deal for:

Huddersfield to Gillingham(Dorset) or Castle Carey or Bruton.

Outward on 23/6/14
Return on 30/6/14

Young Persons railcard held.
£70.80 off-peak return to either Castle Carey or Bruton is the beat I can find.
Any splits or tricks (legal of course)

Thank you in anticipation

What time would you prefer to go? What would be too early/late for you?
Typical journey times to Gillingham are around 5 3/4 hours, a bit more on the return. How do you feel about extending this?
How do you feel about advance tickets?

While it's not a massive saving, you can buy through advance tickets to Gillingham for £55.70 in total (prices from East Coast site).

For flexible tickets, one option is a £9 off-peak return to Manchester (for travel after 10am) and a £59.20 anytime return to Gillingham via Hereford, changing (say) at Newport and Salisbury.

I'm sure there are lots of other options available.

Thanks.
I plumped for £9.55 advances to and from Euston together with a £33 off peak return Paddington to Bruton. Total £52.10.
Bonus of 2 then 2 1/2 hours in that there London.
