Over here, you have to either purchase the ticket before travel commences (most of the time), OR (if that can't be done)wait till the guard comes round on the train (or find them), or find someone at the destination/interchange station to purchase the ticket/extension, same with all tickets over...
Complain to the station manager, on scene, or note dates + times down and email customer services later (as long as you have dates + times, plus trains taken and records of tickets bought, IE anytime day return yyy to xxx)

Oyster seasons do NOT need to be touched in and out... the touching in/out just opens barriers (if you look at signs) it says just pay as you go. If you have a ticket from the edge of the zone onwards then it's valid, as it's a season ticket. RPIs MUST assume you have a season ticket, unless...
Depending on the railcard, you can get a discount on first + standard class (disabled, HM-Forces and senior?), or just standard (16-25, though I think that it's a tad rude, as we pay the same price as the senior railcard!)
1) I have no ticket, I can buy single to the next station, get off and buy a discounted ticket from the ticket office.
2) I have an invalid ticket, I have to buy a full price ticket for the entire journey, plus be out of pocket for the cost of the original, invalid ticket.
