I am sure I travelled on 4 car class 304 units departing from Stoke platform 3 in the 1980s. Can anyone confirm this? or is it just my imagination. I have occasionally been on 2x323 from Manchester, they ran into platform 1 at Stoke.

What puzzles me is why EMR trains were turned at Uttoxeter instead of running trough to Stoke, and why LNR trains did not run from New Street to Stoke.

You missed the point. On a normal train not all passengers would alight at Warrington to travel to Chester and north Wales. On Saturday all the people off the cancelled voyager would have needed to do so.

The 0930 from Euston made an additional stop at Crewe to pick up passengers for Chester and north Wales. Howevr passengers who had boarded off the cancelled 0949 Crewe to Holyhead were later advised that their train had been reinstated. I was travelling to Chester this morning and it was chaos...
