    45mph Heritage Railways?

The Oldbury coach was vacuum piped for the filming. On its return to the Island a full air brake system, including a passenger communication valve, was fitted. We're perfectly happy with running our vintage carriages at 25mph max.

    45mph Heritage Railways?

All the passenger carrying vehicles and some of the engineering fleet on the Isle of Wight Steam Railway are air braked in full compliance with the regulations.

Isle of Wight Island line updates/news

I thought that the rails had been reinstated during the pier work earlier this year.

Isle of Wight Island line updates/news

It will be interesting to see if they retain the connection to the former down platform at Ryde Esplanade. As far as I can see it is only used for berthing On Track Plant when there are works on the pier these days.

Martijn Gilbert leaves FirstGroup with immediate effect

I live in the Medway towns where Arriva is the dominant operator. Last week I travelled on a bus operated, under council contract, by a local operator. Overhead a discussion between a passenger and the driver to the effect that they use his bus when they can as it’s reliable, unlike the other...

Which Peak District railways to visit?

Don’t forget to visit the Middleton Top winding engine on the High Peak Trail. A remarkable survivor of the Cromford and High Peak Railway. https://www.steamheritage.co.uk/museums-and-attractions/entry/middleton-top-engine-house

A scam phone calls and emails discussion.

I've had the same automated call a couple of times recently from different UK mobile numbers.

    RailAdventure Power Cars

Do they have any plans to repaint the pair of power cars that look as if they have been retrieved from a scrap yard?

Preference to buy tickets from a ticket office

During the prolonged Island Line modernisation closure railway replacement buses ran from Ryde Esplanade to Havenstreet on the Isle of Wight Steam Railway as the Ryde to Shanklin RRBs couldn’t call at Smallbrook Junction. These were only advertised locally so didn’t appear on any internet based...

Help understanding the LUL stock numbering system

One minor wrinkle is that the Waterloo & City cars still use their British Rail vehicle numbers.

    Class 444/450 Pantograph wells

I have often wondered if the extra air turbulence created by these unused pantograph wells has a measurable value, in terms of electricity used, over the unit's lifetime.

    Where to buy train parts?

Ebay seller afsl-parts do sell items such as those you mention removed from vehicles scrapped at Eastleigh. It might be worth sending them a message to see what is coming up. Similarly you could contact Booth's at Rotherham.

Grand Central apply for Newcastle - Brighton direct

While it is good to see Simon Calder supporting this initiative, sadly I don't think that he is a serious journalist. This quote from his first paragraph "The train, though, is actually Grand Central – the “open access” division of Arriva, ultimately owned by German Railways." is very out of...

Isle of Wight Island line updates/news

I don't think it receives any maintenance, it is even out of bounds for road rail machines. My suspicion is that the cost of removal couldn't be justified.

Does repainting a unit before withdrawal warrant a need for it to be preserved?

483007 had only a few days in service before withdrawal in near pristine condition. Unfortunately the traction motors didn't enjoy their few days in service but that doesn't detract from it being a very effective static exhibit at Havenstreet. Some used tracyion motors are available in the...

Have changes been made to self-service machines recently?

I generally buy from the forum ticket site and no card is requested. Occasionally I buy elsewhere if the forum can't offer an equivalent price and then I find that I'm asked for the code followed by the card.

Have changes been made to self-service machines recently?

The question then had to be - why would any retailer set the need for a same card collection. To my mind the random collection of letters and numbers is pretty secure in itself.

    Great Britain interurban bus map

An excellent project, thank you. Have you considered the Nu-Venture 130 which runs from Twydall/Rainham to Maidstone? Roughly every other hour on weekdays with four Saturday services. Twydall & Rainham are on the easten edge of the Medway towns so the route runs from the 3 of the 326 on your map...

    GWR to use Euston

Used the GWR Euston - Swindon & back service yesterday (Saturday 28th December). I didn't undrstand why they ran the diesel gen sets for the whole of the quite long layover periods at Euston rather than raising the pantographs to power the "hotel" loads electrically. The trains stopped at...
