But it used to be possible to use it to any Greater Anglia served station, not only on GA services. This change seems surprising and disappointing now the fen line only has one GA train each way that doesn't connect to the boat trains.
Even small car free estates in the UK seem to have problems with car theft and vandalism in the car parks, so I doubt it would work.

Some photo IDed discount cards do only apply at purchase time. After that, the purchased service can be used by whoever you give the coupon to, as long as it isn't reported stolen. But I cannot think of a transport discount card like that.
Did the inspector try to read your card at any time?
If you'd just tapped out, you would have been charged max fare, which I believe is even less than £20. It seems sad that asking honest costs more.
I think an hour is soon. I suspect you have no mobility problems and haven't visited Ely since the ticket barriers were installed. And I believe the Costa opens later and closes earlier than some in the station but I've not checked every day.
An hour would be fine at most stations, but maybe two if there is a restaurant. Not sure if any remain in the UK.

I do not know if it is tfl policy but it sounds like at least one RPI does not want commuters to work in London on strike days. Or maybe dislikes bikes. Or both.
Most of East Anglia, including the most of Norfolk, would love those reduced frequencies instead of a 6.30pm last service. Even a get-home run in the hour or two after cinemas and theatres kick out would help.
No, but that hasn't stopped another operator apparently trawling their delay repay claims and making accusations when any anomaly is detected, such as not tapping in for a cancelled train (as well as many anomalies which probably do merit questioning).
