Buying SE High Speed supplement - including for Calais

SE's website states Er, I can't see how to get one from the self-service machines at Oxford. Do they mean at any SE station? I know there were long thread(s) about the Calais day returns before they put NOT HS on them. Now that they have put NOT HS on the London Terminals - Calais day return...

    Bangor>Euston advance fares 1 August

There currently aren't any. Is that because Virgin haven't yet loaded advance fares for August, or because there aren't going to be any advance fares in August?

    Trams for Oxford?

Oxfordshire County Council is considering a long term plan which "cannot rule out" trams from St Giles to the new Water Eaton Parkway station, and trams (partly overhead, it seems from the pictures?) on an upgraded Morris Cowley branch...

    Halesworth: crossing the tracks?

I'm arriving at Halesworth from Ipswich, on platform 1. How do I cross to platform 2, and exit for a bus to Southwold? Can I use the "barrow crossing" shown on the station plan? http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/stations/HAS/details.html

Thello "cross-border operator of the year"

Thello has won an award - apparently for its operations in 2012. http://www.europeanrailcongress.com/news/winners-announced-for-the-2013-european-rail-congress-awards/ Seems rather sad, given that punctuality in 2013 was often not good, and the Roma-Paris train is about to die. For what it's...

    Milano Porta Garibaldi

Paris-Milano trains, Italotreno trains, and many Frecce, use Porta Garibaldi. Is this (some?) operators' choice - eg because they can run through Milano without reversing? Or is it lack of capacity at Centrale? Or is it RFI being awkward to SNCF and Italotreno?

    Weird fares Denmark Hill>Willesden Junction

Do any of you sages have any comments on this article in Guardian Money? http://www.theguardian.com/money/blog/2013/oct/14/rail-fares-first-capital-connect?commentpage=1 In particular, why does the £2 paper ticket Denmark Hill>Willesden Junction exist? Is it a relic from a bargain priced...

    Oxford Leeds returning via Stockport

I want to go Oxford>Leeds on Sunday 22 July, don't care what route, and then return on Tuesday 24 July breaking my journey at Stockport. NRE, if I enter via Manchester Piccadilly, will happily offer me an offpeak return for £88.40, and gives me train times via Manchester and Huddersfield. Seems...

    Really simple fares

(See post #20 for a Mark 2, modified in the light of much just criticism.) Every couple of years, as I recall, ATOC announces that fares will be simplified. They then get even more complicated. For example, I have the choice of bus or train Oxford to London. FGW will only sell me a...

    Turning Tornado at Willesden?

On 15 Sept Tornado + support coach went from Southall to Willesden SW, and carriages went from Eastleigh to Willesden SW, all to form Cathedrals Express Woking to Lincoln. I assume (but don't know) that Tornado went chimney-first from Southall. However, I saw her approach Old Oak Common Lane...

Could FGW occasionally run a longer HST?

According to post #42 in this thread http://www.railforums.co.uk/showthread.php?t=28509&page=3 a 2+10 HST is possible. And, to judge from the Luxulyan incident, it isn't that difficult to play with the couplings. So, at a moment (if there are any?) when FGW has a spare set, can they, in...

    Weekend First on FGW

If we hold GroupSave tickets (Oxford to Truro), can we use Weekend First? The FGW website seems to say that Weekend First is possible with any standard off-peak ticket, but not Advance tickets.

Seats together with weekend first upgrade

I'm going to Cornwall with children and grandchildren at the end of August. If some of us travel from Oxford (via Reading), and some of us travel from Paddington, and we're all on the same train from Reading, and I buy all our tickets together, and we all upgrade to weekend first: 1. Do we get...
