Exactly this. Also on a two-platform station, or at least ones where you can guarantee your train will definitely arrive on that platform, it's fine to spread out. The amount of times I've been given 20 seconds' notice of a platform alteration at various stations, especially West Hampstead...

If there is a seat selector - possibly with higher charges for "better" seats a la low cost airlines - then sure they will. And of course a forward facing seat at a table next to the window would be more valuable than an aisle seat facing backwards without a table.

Do tickets purchased with a 16-25 Railcard have to be linked to a specific Railcard, ie entering the Railcard number? As far as I know this is not the case - so I am very confused what the TOC (and Appeals Service) think is incorrect in this case?
