What would be your preferred route? I did find some alternative routes that were more or less the same length but involved multiple changes, and >10 stops. Personally a journey with loads of stops I find quite fatiguing.

some TOCs such as Avanti require you to enter your full name, post code, email, and phone number, to access wifi. Given that other train companies just let you press a button to accept their terms and conditions, why the need for such personal information and what do they do with it?

Yes, actually this seems very promising. Fast and not too arduous. Also easy enough to walk across from Euston to St Pancras and take the Thameslink. Only problem is Superfare times are only known 24 hours in advance, and London-Cambridge GA or TL normal fares are pricey.

Planning things a few weeks in advance is how most people I know run their lives. We shouldn't have to stretch that to months to get decent ticket prices. Yes, that does indeed get the price down to £60 return with a railcard. A good price. It is very very long with many stops though.

The timings of 42-48 mins from Queen St to Waverley don't seem particularly impressive considering they only stop at Falkirk High. Scot Rail services manage that already with several more stops.

The Crewe-Newport advances are over £40 one way, the anytime return I found beats those. Glasgow-Crewe is £18.50 min. So looks like £120 min. And that's using the somewhat slower Welsh Marshes line route. via Bham and the prices go crazy.
