The double deck stock will go. It‘s very expensive to maintain, old, not very comfortable ans, as you say, niche.
I don‘t have more details, sorry. Both should be possible technically.
From an Austrian rail forum:
- Italy NJ services are planned to switch to the new sets between September and December 2023; from the timetable change in December, all services to Italy should run with the new sets;
- Between December 2023 and February 2024, the Brenner day trains should change...
Once the new NJ sets get approval, it is certainly the plan for all Italy services to switch over as fast as possible, for the regulatory reasons I have pointed out upthread, and to free the old sets for the planned new and increased services.
As to Amsterdam, Zurich etc with the new sets...
It’s not yet a huge problem - but apparently it is the reason the Milan sleeper had to serve Porta Garibaldi instead of Centrale even before the extension to La Spezia - but in the middle to long term, there is a risk non-reversible train sets will not be allowed into Santa Lucia, Santa Maria...
No, it’s a general rule that has nothing to do with the tunnels, which are (until the Brenner tunnel opens) all outside of Italy anyway. Grandfather rights have a sunset clause to them, and while that keeps being extended (mainly so not to stop traffic to Austria, where only the RJ sets in...
The continuous heavy delays at Deutsche Bahn and their very low reliability rather show they have much too little slack in the system.
Admittedly, the problem are not the new HSL, but rather the rail network in and around major cities as well as many mixed-use classic lines which have not yet...
One of the problems with (night) trains to Italy are the very specific Italian fire protection rules which are much more onerous than the RIC standard. Those are they main reason ÖBB is buying new stock for day and night services into Italy and also mean that refurbished older stock cannot be...
Airlines routinely offer their flights for much less on connections than on point-to-point trips in order to fill the planes. It’s nothing special and makes economic sense as long as the marginal costs are covered.
Of course, E* might not do it if they think they can fill every seat on their...
In Austria, 25/12 and 26/12, being public holidays, have a Sunday schedule. 24/12 is a half working day (with shops open until the early afternoon), although loads of people have the day off. As such, it has - more or less - a Saturday schedule, which in urban transport usually thins out around...
Democracy doesn’t run on efficiency alone, which the French should have learned a long time ago, and recently from the gillets jaunes (the same is true for the UK…as should have been found out when the red wall crumbled).
The Swiss know very well why each of their rail investment plans gives...
I didn’t consider SE class 395 services „Intercity“ and E* are not domestic services.

Thank you for making this point. Indeed, frequencies even on TGV services are actually not that good compared to most European countries.
It is, and even more so if you compare it, say, with the Gotthard base tunnel.
The problem is that it is politically unpalatable to reduce existing security arrangements- what if something happens after it is done?
In any case, as long as the UK insists on having immigration before boarding a...
They still have to prove they can make them work though. The French are quite good at grand plans…
I believe that even changing from Nord to Est will discourage many people. What seems to be underestimated here that a large proportion of people using night trains do so because these are fed up...
They are. NightJet made a profit before Covid and there is no reason to think they don’t do now, when demand is even stronger.
There *is* some public money involved, but it’s only a small proportion since Austria can’t issue PSOs for foreign countries - but then most transport incurs some...
Again and again: if night trains are going to have a future from London, it is going to be via a change at Brussels Midi.
That, unfortunately, will exclude good connections to the South of France and Spain (and probably Italy), even though those might be the most successful, because
- SNCF...
