Also, aren't the 700s 100mph units, and the 387s 110mph units, so could the extra speed be usuful on Kings X to Cambridge services, at least on the ECML to catch up on late running for example?
Barring weather, you would expect England to win 3-0. But you'd really hope that England will be forced out of 3rd gear, as that was the easiest innings win I've seen.
It's also because of back to back matches, so gives an extra day before the Lord's Test next week, which starts on Thursday. Otherwise I'm sure this game would have started on Thursday as well.

Another issue with a lot of flights from Gatwick, and indeed other airports dominated by budget and charter airlines, is that flights often depart at horrible o'clock, and if people are having to arrive at the airport at 5am, rail use is less attractive or indeed practical.
Southeastern would seem the obvious one. It would be embarrassing for the new PM to do a big video at Derby about manufacturing skills, if a big order like this was to go elsewhere.
It was 26 years ago :o but I'd forgotten that I did the day trip from Toronto to Niagara as a organised tour, which started with a boat trip across Lake Ontario to Niagara-on-the-lake, then a coach to the falls, which was a much more interesting day than going all the way by tourbus.
