Brush Maybach Class 53 "Falcon" : HP and tractive effort compared to the Westerns

Thanks for that. Are we saying it was the same engine, just set at different max rpm or something ?

Brush Maybach Class 53 "Falcon" : HP and tractive effort compared to the Westerns

Can anyone confirm what the HP of Falcon's two Maybach engines were ? They are widely quoted as 1440hp each I always thought she had the same engines as the Westerns (which were set at 1350hp each) ? As a supplementary question, I understand Falcon had a lower max tractive effort but what was...

    Laira Depot in the 1970s

It may well be that. It's probably just an optical illusion that it looks closer to the main shed than that 08 servicing shed ! Just out of interest, when was the latter built ? 1769189484 Is this the small servicing building you refer to ? It appears to have different colour "skin" and the...

    Laira Depot in the 1970s

No, that's the 1971 picture, it's the white building on the left of the other picture (dated 1977).

    Laira Depot in the 1970s

Can anyone please identify what the white structure is on the left of the 1977 picture ? It is not on the 1971 picture and I had assumed it was the new shed opened to service HSTs (on the south east side of the original 1962 diesel depot) but Wiki says that did not open till 1980 ?!? The...

Werrington dive under helps cut "21 minutes off the fastest KX to Edinburgh service"

I was just reading the Jan issue of Railway Magazine, and in its "From the Archive" section (p47) for "20 Years ago" it said (about the completion of the GNER "Mallard" refurbishment programme) the coaches were given "new sculptured seats with tow inches of extra legroom". This is incorrect, the...

Where is this class 50 in Chester ?

Never a truer word spoken, how far will it all go though..... 1768731675 You talk like the cost is irrelevant, but it's not just the cost of the second loco, it's the cost of the wages for the second driver, in fact back then was it actually two drivers ?

Where is this class 50 in Chester ?

You say it was "dangerous operation" ? How many accidents were as a result of carefully reversing a train ? And I mean serious accidents. The problem is having to run around twice, or provide a second loco just for the manoeuvre, is very expensive and also time consuming.

Where is this class 50 in Chester ?

I would only say that this thread, more accurately the replies, has shown how internet forums really should be !

Where is this class 50 in Chester ?

Very interesting... Could the train in the pic actually be reversing then ? ! ? Your explanation fits in with a second picture in the aforementioned book (on p20, though it may actually have been taken 5 minutes earlier than the pic on p17 ! ) where the same train is coming round the line past...

Where is this class 50 in Chester ?

The picture below is out of 70s Spotting Days North West (p17) of a Class 50 in Chester. It is labelled as being on diversion from the WCML due to engineering works. I thought the depot (now the present day DMU depot, ex 6A steam depot ?) is on the left, but that makes no sense as wouldn't that...

Donnington Telford railfreight terminal and branch

Could anyone confirm the opening date of the Donnington Telford railfreight terminal ? I have 2008 but that could be just the branch line ? And how busy is it ? Lastly when was Stafford Junction renamed Donnington junction ? Was it when the branch was reopened ?

Route of the original wagonway over the Causey Arch

Thanks for that. Are we saying the original wagonway may have gone along the course to the footpath (on the map) near the west edge of the wood and then joined up with the present route of the Tanfield railway (which I understand was - for much of its route - the original route of the wagonway...

Route of the original wagonway over the Causey Arch

As far as I understand it (please correct me if I am wrong ! ) there used to be a wagon way over the Causey Arch from when it was opened in 1725 but this fell out of use when the railway (the present Tanfield railway) was opened in about 1840 which stayed on the east side of Causey Burn to get...

What's the latest on Soham to Ely redoubling ?

Rather than start a new thread to ask this, and it is obliquely relevant, I read that Chippenham Junc* to Dullingham was singled in 1978, but when was the section west of that (i.e. to Coldham Lane Junc - Cambridge) singled ? * Was it singled westwards from Chippenham junc or just from...

Ex NE railway from Thorpe Gates Jct to Oakhill Jct (around Drax)

I have just read an interesting letter (Jan p39) and article (Nov p520) in the RWM for 1979 about this very route. Apparently there were plans to reopen it to allow coal trains easier access to Drax (without reversal at Knottingley etc).

    Hammant & Morgan Duette controller : Full/Half wave & High/Low resistance switches

I have found similar. With some locos it has little effect, but with others it does seem to "widen" the speed control.

What's the latest on Soham to Ely redoubling ?

Baker's rail atlases keep telling me the line from Soham to Ely is due to be redoubled, but the last mention I can find was from about 2015, and then it wasn't too positive ! What's the latest ?
