I was reading a past article in the Railway Performance Society fastest times supplements that dealt with fastest times with early BR diesel locos, including 10000 and 10001. And it set me wondering what the maximum speed of 10000 and 10001 was, though the less obvious question was did they have...

Note how again there were no Steam Plates above the £32,000 threshold, in fact any where...
I can remember them building the Joan Croft Flyover (North Doncaster Chord) back in 2013 and could understand how it would be very useful for all the coal trains to the Aire power stations, but since two out of the three power stations have now shut the question is how many trains use the...
It's what I call "OIMBY" (Only In My Back Yard), the opposite of "NIMBY".

It isn't just time saving, driving on a through route at 20mph is unbelievably frustrating, one literally feels one if hardly moving.
There is also speeding tickets. We have all been trained as drivers that if...
I'll tell you an interesting sidelight on NIMYISM, or rather the inconsistent attitude to it.
One of the arguments most commonly bought up by adherents of a blanket 20mph in built up areas is that "the locals want it". I am quite prepared to believe (if the boundary of those surveyed is "nicely"...
That's a bit contentious but what is not is that HS2 trains would not be of any use to them as there will be no station in the Chilterns. Unlike the M40, which they could actually use once it was built !
I specifically chose England because HS2 was never planned to go to Scotland.
As regards the length of the UK I don't think north of Edinburgh or possibly Aberdeen (and certainly not north of Inverness) is particularly relevant for the purposes of high speed inter city travel planning..
Quite, but in Spain and France (and even much of Germany) their lower population density meant they didn't have to do that so much, and they could make the lines straighter more easily.
Population density (people per Km2)
England = 443 (it's even higher if one excludes north of York and Preston...
They are countries with much more room, uninhabited land, than us ?

Surely it's cost v benefit, and has been pointed out in a relatively small country like ours the benefit from 225mph running is not going to be as high. On the other hand in a densely populated country like ours the...
So why is 187mph, or 200mph later, OK for a huge country like France ?
And what would the time saved difference be at - say - 150mph over 225mph for London to Manchester ?
I thought one the main reasons for the construction of HS2 was to increase capacity anyway ? Even 125mph would help with...
125mph may have been too slow, how about 150mph or 175mph ?
I never could understand why they designed HS2 for 225mph in this relatively small country of ours....
How much cheaper would HS2 have been to build had it been designed for - say - 185mph (or even 150mph), and how much difference in the end to end journey time would it have made ?
