    Loconundrum

Yesterday my new starting station paid off again... 1. ELY 2. BLY! Today... I got cloae geographically quite quickly but I don't know that area anywhere near well enough, and it's a lot more obscure than we're used to! 7.

What is the closest you've come to meeting your maker?

Well, it's railway related actually, at the age about 9. Standing on one side of the road bridge over Tyne Yard as an HST approached, and as it passed underneath, I turned and ran across the road without looking, to see it through. A car missed me by feet as I ran, they braked to a halt but not...

First class rear on Thameslink allways declassified.

I'm not sure that's entirely true though because of what the Thameslink-related changes, platform extensions, fixed formations and timetables made possible for the service. Ignoring the fact that the timetable was a disaster, the introduction of Thameslink meant the twice an hour semi fast (RYS...

Avanti 805's under the wires on WCML (Euston - LIverpool)

That's what I call planning for growth!

Avanti 805's under the wires on WCML (Euston - LIverpool)

Yes, but it's only one station to deal with that issue. If we had 9 cars (say 2.5 First, 6.5 Standard) Assuming coach A and B would be off the platform southbound, pick up only, that isn't the end of the world (coach A has fewer seats and is usually the quietest on Avanti trains anyway), and...

Avanti 805's under the wires on WCML (Euston - LIverpool)

Then either extend the platforms, fit SDO to 390s, order 9 car with SDO, or don't serve it. It's a huge procurement decision for one short platform, isn't it? I completely understand ordering 5 cars, but why 7 cars?

Avanti 805's under the wires on WCML (Euston - LIverpool)

Fair point on what the Everos have replaced, although latterly the Voyagers ran doubled up to Edinburgh via Birmingham as 10 coach (albeit entirely under the wires) and ran to Chester as 5s/10s and onto Holyhead as 5s (10s?). They didn't run to Liverpool to my knowledge, at least in recent...

Avanti (West Coast Intercity) after being brought back into public ownership

It feels like anything is going to be on the table if it saves cash. The third Birmingham each hour, at least off peak. Then the extremities: Wrexham. The Blackpool. Simplify the Anglo Scottish by routing everyone to/through Glasgow. Fewer ECS movements, fewer staff bases. London and...

Avanti (West Coast Intercity) after being brought back into public ownership

More likely to cut everything back to the core. I'd worry about Holyhead, Blackpool and Edinburgh rather than Inverness.

Avanti 805's under the wires on WCML (Euston - LIverpool)

It's not a good thing, but I am far more upset about the sudden proliferation of 5 and 7 car intercity trains on both the West and East Coast. Fleet orders trimmed back to their bare minimum by short sighted paucity and penny pinching, and built to a miserly Government specification yet somehow...

    Loconundrum

That 20 minutes can be a giveaway though. I can't think of another 20 minute walk I have encountered, maybe Kings Cross to Euston but I think when it was Stafford, I was routed Kings Cross to Euston as a 5 minute tube journey. I've switched to Ely as my starting station. Kings Cross is 1:15...

Bought a single instead of a return

Very true in this case. And for what it's worth, glad to hear that you did it for people!

Bought a single instead of a return

Indeed, but is it not true that regardless of that, at least under current guidance, once fully used a ticket should not technically be excessed?

And I got it in two! There aren't many 7 hour connections from Peterborough! 1780480573 Is it me or was Shrewsbury done twice in the last few weeks? I didn't immediately guess it on Sunday or Monday (whenever it was) because I thought I'd seen it in the last month!

First class rear on Thameslink allways declassified.

I've always suspected that this is because of the primary importance of advertising disabled boarding correctly (although the marshaling has the disabled doors in the same place on 387 and 379) and the position of First Class and is a less important but useful side effect. The formation is...

First class rear on Thameslink allways declassified.

Theoretically yes, and I am as paranoid as anyone about poorly trained RPIs, but I've never seen a case on here, on Reddit or in the press about someone being chinged in the rear compartment, or even had to clarify/correct an RPI on board whilst sitting there. Was it ever reported on here? Was...

First class rear on Thameslink allways declassified.

For a Cambridge/Peterborough-Brighton/Horsham there are 26 declassified seats on a train that seats 666, and it is full within a couple of stops on busy services. It might seem fairer for all customers to advertise it better (and less of a hack for us in the know) but it wouldn't suddenly mean...

First class rear on Thameslink allways declassified.

GN systems are very good, in my experience. I have never seen them incorrectly report the different locations of First Class (and disabled area) on 387s, 379s and 700s.

First class rear on Thameslink allways declassified.

Yes. I have seen some recent vague doubt over this on this forum on this issue and whether it is explicitly stated anywhere, but it's beyond reasonable doubt, to me. I have passed every ticket check I have ever had in such situations (I travel from a station only served by GN), station...

Bought a single instead of a return

If you are already travelling you're probably out of luck, but if not or you've only just boarded, you could try breaking your journey at Ely or Cambridge and asking the ticket office for an excess there. I think that would be your best bet. Cambridge are particularly knowledgable. Obviously...
