LSL/Saphos have fitted aircon to a Mk1 coach. It's the first time aircon has been fitted to a Mk1. As a result the sliding windows have all been sealed to prevent them from being opened. This is a trial they are running with this one coach. If it works they will roll it out to all the Mk1s. So the days of opening windows on Saphos tours may be coming to an end.

I can only assume this is the work of a marketing manager who feels people will find the old rolling stock more attractive if they fit air conditioning.

For a very significant portion of the market, the attraction of the stock is the fresh air opening windows, with the ability to hear the loco performance.

This is a truly terrible idea.

LSL doesn’t seem that bothered with the diesel enthusiast sector anyway given the number of times they’ve operated excursions that would have been superb railtours outright if the traction had been advertised up front.

Wait a minute, doesn't this revert the very appeal of using MK1s? I can see the benefits on the really hot days (provided the reliability of said air con over 30 degrees is sufficient), but for most of the year, the opening windows are exactly what I want to hear the sounds of the leading loco, whether it be steam or diesel.

Is it possible this is a safety thing? Perhaps the ORR are trying to look into ways to get rid of all opening windows of this sort.

And of course, we all know that a 25+ degree sealed tube with no ventilation at all is extremely safe, and does not cause passengers to pass out at all!

On a more serious note, this is essentially what passengers will be subjected to when the air-con inevitably fails.

I think even the regular Saphos customers will be unimpressed by that. I can’t see it having a positive effect on bookings at all. People are paying big money for an authentic experience, and that isn’t it.

There are definitely times when the heat in a mk1 can be totally excessive, and if the ORR insist on restricting window opening even further it may be unavoidable. Hopefully some kind of compromise can be found where it's only used above a certain temperature threshold, or at certain times maybe?

Does anyone know what's happening with 40012? Last I heard it had been moved to Crewe but that was in December and I've not heard anything since.

Last viewed it on May 29th, didn’t have group standard headlight or current style OLE warning stickers so some work to be done externally - in cab status, radio fitment , data recorder , TPWS fitment etc not known but it is in the dry undercover always a bonus.

Correct me if I'm wrong but 40012 is owned by Andania Engineering, don't think part of LSL?
I heard some financial irregularities over the sale from the former owner but not sure what's going on to tbh.
