Back in the 1950's when my father was coming home from leave he would ask the guard if a stop could be arranged near Clayton Bridge railway station to avoid travelling into Manchester. More often than not, a packet of "Blue Liners" was all it took.

As far as I'm aware the signal box at Bamber Bridge controls several level crossings whilst signalling is from Preston. If there is a single overnight service is the box manned for a full shift or is it just covered in the time when the service is passing?

There are obviously some drawbacks with running single class 20's - hence they were often coupled nose to nose meaning that 2 locos were required rather than one. Class 25s (and their Scottish brethren) were able to operate singly with no operational downsides.

Without wishing to derail the thread, what's the reason for the RTT entry? The NORAD santa tracker is pretty visual and one I showed my own children 20 plus years ago. I can't see the same attraction for a static Web page full of numbers.

Wasn't there an unadvertised all stations service that ran as a paper exercise for Santa? I certainly remember seeing it uploaded once or twice to RTT.
