Britain was built on its railways... now we can't even run them

Yes the rail industry is guilty as charged of crimes against the English language. When I was young we got off trains, we didn't alight.... it would be much better English to say...'The next station which this train will be stopping at shortly...will be.....' or even to be completely anal, but...

    East Coast WiFi

Anybody who wants to use the internet on EC is probably better off with a 3G dongle anyway. With a 3G connection the speed is about 7Mb/s, as opposed to about 40Kb/s on EC Wi-fi. The East Coast, certainly Darlington - Newcastle is pretty good for 3G coverage. Costs me £5 a month, rather than the...

East Coast to charge for WiFi in Standard

Yes, I think they've taken a `big-hit' from corporate First Class dropping, although I also get the feeling that a lot of leisure travellers are switching to cheaper AP 1st to avoid the chavs. I also vaguely recall that some companies with security concerns issue their staff with dedicated 3G...

East Coast to charge for WiFi in Standard

Whether it's right or wrong to make people pay is not something I have a strong view on. I think that EC has rather missed the boat on this one. I tried the free 15 minutes yesterday, and compared it with the speed I was getting from my Orange 3G dongle. The dongle was a bit faster. If I'd gone...

DfT to give TOCs financial incentive to cut services

Maybe a Lib Dem government might make a difference....

Liberal Democrats: "NR to refund 1/3 of ticket price for rail replacement services"

The forms for East Coast are available on line as PDF files, and they no longer require the ticket to be submitted, just the ticket number, although my wife sent a photocopy of the ticket last week just in case.

How is Grand Central fairing these days ?

Lord Adonis is said to be impressed with the GC streamlined fares options and is looking at EC fares review, but it seems that GC has been losing money. Is this still the case of has the 4th service made a difference to loadings?

    Grand Central - Additional Services

Will these additional services be classed as `off-peak' on the Fiday? And out of interest, how is the 16.50 doing since the introduction of the new 19.19 KGX-SUN?

Have the 180's been misbehaving? I noticed a couple of cancellations during the week.

    Grand Central Discussion

The website has now clarified this and the higher fares apply to the 16.50, which I suspect may become rather quiet.

    Grand Central Discussion

4th Service confirmed for Mon... But the fares section on the website says that the peak fares apply to the first Up and the last Down trains of the day. I thought that the 19.19 back would be classed as `off-peak'

Next in line for bail out and nationalisation: Railways, power, water.

I agree. I remember that a now retired senior ex BR manager once told me that his time could pinpoint the day the recession of the 1980s began by the drop in business fares on the Inter-City route he was involved in running. The nightmare scenario facing the railways at the moment is a...
