East Coast WiFi

Since East Coast has brought in changes to the onboard WiFi such as offering it free to First Class passengers and charging Standard Class passengers after 15 minutes, has anyone noticed a improvement in the availability of the service and how the connection has got better?

I've used it today while travelling to and from Edinburgh and it's much improved, instead of the connection keep dropping I have a constant connection which is a big improvement on the previous offering, of course it would have been nice if WiFi was free for all thoughout the train but East Coast has done the right thing and because of that, the service is better for all.

It will be that-when did the free wi-fi for all customers stop-thought NXEC offered that.

NXEC brought it in pretty soon after they started their trail of destruction - oops, I mean franchise - and IIRC it was stopped a few weeks ago by East Coast.

Right-probably best as wifi that drops out every few mins is no use to anyone-providing it's not too expensive people will pay for the service.

Anybody who wants to use the internet on EC is probably better off with a 3G dongle anyway. With a 3G connection the speed is about 7Mb/s, as opposed to about 40Kb/s on EC Wi-fi. The East Coast, certainly Darlington - Newcastle is pretty good for 3G coverage. Costs me £5 a month, rather than the £4.95 an hour charged by EC. Only drawback is that 3G doesn't do an automatic handover between transmitters, so some re-connection will be necessary.

I actually use my 3G dongle on Grand Central where the wi-fi is still free, simply because it is faster
