I've just checked on BR Fares and that is indeed the case. However, I've just checked the photo of the ticket that gave rise to this incident, and it is "valid via any permitted route".

I hadn't realised this service had started until we were in Llandudno earlier this week. Purely by chance we ended up catching the service back from Rhos; after waiting for about twenty minutes it turned up at the same time as three (yes three!) double deckers on the 12. It took the driver ages...

But is it not reasonable to expect that arriving on a direct train, with a flexible ticket, the barriers should open?

He showed me a photo of what he presented and it was definitely the ticket. He's a fairly seasoned rail traveler although more likely to use e-tickets if he buys them himself.

This has just been reported by my son. He was travelling from Nailsea and Backwell to Heathrow. His ticket was a Super Off Peak Single, restriction code XC and as it was bought by his employer it was one of the credit card sized ones that the ticket machines typically issue and have been around...

Thanks everyone. Train manager came round and switched them on. By then everyone had seats and there haven't been any conflicts, but it was chaos for the first ten minutes.

Sorry if this has been asked before. I'm currently on a TGV from Lyon to Lille. It's one of the old single deck sets. Every seat has two numbers and nobody seems to know how it's meant to work. Any help gratefully received.

That's interesting. I've played with the evening trains to Stafford and get a similar differential in fares. The itinerary I generated certainly figures the letters CIV quite prominently. The same fare is also available on the Forum's site, but I can't see any mention of CIV in the itinerary. I...

In this case though the cost of the CIV is double that of the Advance. I agree that it's easy enough to buy on the forum's site.

Thanks for all your replies. I was hoping someone would have a definitive answer, but the fact there isn't makes me glad I asked the question! I'm inclined to risk it with the Advance for the 1900 or possibly later.
