Sorry if this has been asked before. I'm currently on a TGV from Lyon to Lille. It's one of the old single deck sets. Every seat has two numbers and nobody seems to know how it's meant to work. Any help gratefully received.

Most TGV sets still in service - certainly the single deck 'Reseau' sets - have an electronic display on the top corners of the aisle seats giving two different numbers, which change according to the train's direction of travel. In theory the number currently in use should be illuminated brightly and the other number should be almost invisible. However these sets are now 30-35 years old and the electronic apparatus may not always be working as efficiently as designed.

In theory one set of numbers will be illuminated, which is the number currently in use. They switch depending on the train’s direction of travel. If neither or both are illuminated you’ve got a bit of a problem, but you might be able to work it out if you know which direction your seat was supposed to face
The Lacroix single deckers (the purple/green interior) have a system in 2nd (and some in 1st) where the seat numbering changes depending on the set orientation. This allows to guarentee a forward facing seat if requested.
There should only be one set of number illuminated
The newest TGV Euro-duplex with the Oceane refurbishment actually rotate the whole 1st class seating to achieve the same purpose

Thanks everyone. Train manager came round and switched them on. By then everyone had seats and there haven't been any conflicts, but it was chaos for the first ten minutes.

Does anyone have video of the seats rotating? I had a quick search but couldn't see anything
