    Royal Train 14 April 1955

There's a photo of this train being hauled by Jubilees 45571 and 45574 at Cherry Tree, out of Blackburn - interestingly they are taking the branch to Chorley via Brinscal and Wheelton, which means it would have then worked over the Adlington White Bear - Boars Head Junction line to access the...

    Wilson government & rail closures

Has anyone got information as to why following the 1964 election, the Wilson government oversaw so many closures despite an election promise of halting the Conservative Marples/Beeching cuts?

Locos and units you didnt like and still dont miss

Wouldn’t cross the road for a 47 Duff back in the day, hate them when they are stuck on the back of steam specials for destination stock movements. HST’s. Never saw the fuss about class 50’s years ago. Very uninspiring looking Locos. Again, wouldn’t get excited seeing one now. Never a fan of...

    St Pancras and steam railtours.

I didn't know that. Makes sense... Liverpool St - 60163 Tornado was there last weekend.

    St Pancras and steam railtours.

Just wondering why Kings Cross, Liverpool Street, Euston, Waterloo, Victoria and Paddington see pretty decent steam railtours starting and sometimes returning, yet I've not seen anything about St Pancras - I'd love to see for example, a Scot take maroon mk1 stock on a midland mainline special...

Lines which perished, but their preservation wishable-for

Haha! Indeed. Despite being Lancashire born and bred, I've had a long held fascination with the line and have often wondered why they didn't push to Inverness. Maybe the line would still be in service today...

Lines which perished, but their preservation wishable-for

I think the Spean Bridge - Fort Augustus (at the southern end of Loch Ness) line would make a stunning preserved line that would help traffic issues mid-summer. A service from Fort William - Fort Augustus would be a fantastic ride. Shame it closed in the 1930's..

Wigan - Kirkby preservation. Was it a dream or complete nonsense?!

Whilst visiting my mother in Wigan I passed under the Wigan Wallgate - Kirkby line and a vague memory flashed through my mind. I think (!!) I recall that sometime in the 1970's, this line was earmarked for possible closure and someone attempted to form a preservation society with a view to run...

Gresley Coach Stock - main line suitability

I paid a visit to the SVR today and had a leisurely trip behind Bulleid rebuilt West Country 34027 Taw Valley which was pulling a beautiful set of Gresley LNER coaches - Anyhow, pardon my ignorance, but is it feasible that these type of coaches could ever run on the mainline? Would be nice to...

(Suggestions for) Next Scottish medium to large project?

I love the fact that a decent portion of an old mainline has reopened. So with that in mind, a complete and utter pipe dream, but I always thought that the Spean Bridge - Fort Augustus branch which closed in the 1930's should have connected to Inverness. Fort William - Inverness - Aberdeen...

    Great Britain VIII

I'd guess 1964 - the remaining locos after the initial withdrawals of 1963 were all pushed to Crewe and Carlisle sheds - I would imagine that the summer of 1964 would be about right as they had all gone by September '64. A travesty considering the motive power that replaced them was not as up to...

Q6 to visit the Wensleydale Railway

I've never visited the line - only been to Hawes a few times.. How far off are they extending the line to Hawes or even Garsdale?

    5972 Hogwarts Castle in Disneyworld

Hmm.. I've heard different. It was on some railtours last year which were being advertised as the last ever main line run for the loco - after that it was going to be a static exhibit. What 'ever' means in this case could be something else?

Class 24 and 25 diesel locos

Thanks for the answers. I must have seen the last 24 in my older brother's book as it was withdrawn in January 1980 - he was spotting in the late '70's..
