It's fairly common practice, at least at my local station, to let a companion through the barriers to "see off" the person travelling. Personally, I've never been refused.

Yes, he probably could but, as you say, at a price. Most experience on these boards points to you being able to do it yourself if you have the time and the necessary patience. The TOCs are usually willing to settle out of court. It depends what speed and lack of hassle means to you.
