It's fairly common practice, at least at my local station, to let a companion through the barriers to "see off" the person travelling. Personally, I've never been refused.

Sounds a decent outcome. Admin fee alone can often be more than that.

GWR may not be prompt, but they are very likely to settle out of court. I believe it's their stated policy to avoid prosecution where possible.
