WRT Below (Don't want another post for this...): "In the world where people in Newcastle have sod all idea what I know of or what I do for a living..."
I'm hoping the old embankmants will be used if nothing else, every single fantasy route I've come up with uses them.
My good man, I quote back to you your own words in answer to that. I highly doubt a 23 year old engineer (who if having done a 4 year MSc will have only been as such for 1 year) will be in any kind of position to have any influence whatsoever over the routings of high speed lines. You said yourself, fantasy :) Unless you work for the right department in Network Rail, work in the right department of various consultancy firms, work for the DfT or work for HS2 Ltd then what you do and claim to know is irrelevant (with the utmost of respect and reverence).

So here are some facts as known at present. HS2 assumed service patterns from phase 2 onwards currently allows for just 1 outer Manchester station (not 2 as you suggest you have personally modelled for), which thus far has not been modelled (and will be served by 7 of the 9 services pencilled in to operate on this section of HS2). Assumptions are that Liverpool HS2 services will continue to join the high speed line at Lichfield post phase 2. This is all in their updated economic case report published as recently as 12th January.

Yes, all you can glean from the diagram in the economic case for the Y is that the Manchester route will join the WCML somewhere south of Preston (Warrington/Wigan helpfully not shown), with Liverpool not involved.

Still leaves a lot of scope for route variations.
I wonder if they have modelled the slower speeds of the CC stock compared to 390s north of Lichfield.

Could run quite happily through Low Level ;)

Although on a slightly more serious note, it would fit a 4 platform station with 430m platforms nicely on the old Central Station, was still a car park last time I was there.

A simple check would show from the tunnel mouth to the pavement on Ranelagh St is between 330 to 360 metres, and from the tunnel mouth to the former buffer stops is 270 metres. Now how do you fit 4 x 430 metre platforms in there?

Somewhere, not in London
I said through low level, didn't say it would stop there ;) heh...

Like I also said, the only space I can see for 430m platforms is at the old Liverpool Central site that is now a Car Park, would be a conveluted access via Kirkby or a bit of a loop though...

The fastest route to Liverpool will be, and is, via Runcorn Gap. Bringing HS2 to Weaver Junction is not an unreasonable thing to ask for. The route is largely green fields.

There may be a case, one day, for building a new HS2 bridge across the Mersey from Runcorn to Liverpool airport and beyond. Though I seem to recall the (now Northern Line) route to Central was built as three tracks, not four. Goodness only knows why.

They modeled it for Scotland, dont know if they did for Liverpool but the lower max speed would be offset by the higher acceleration since in the economic case theyve put three stops im before Liverpool, Its not like the 390's will be tilting as they travel through Liverpool anyway.

Why would Liverpool need an HS rail line? Manchester and Leeds yes, because they are vital business hubs... but Liverpool???

Can you explain what you mean by this?

Also, the silly 'Scouseport' comments, if you would.
