Scotrail management have been extremely weak in dealing with the driver who pulled a sickie. The driver should have been sacked as he has lied, deceived, committed fraud and the whole mess would come under GROSS MISCONDUCT. I myself was taken off train driving duties back in 2004 for a lesser offence and ASLEF were quite happy with my punishment of the sliding scale. Not even a whimper about a strike ballot from Mr K Lindsay, double standards from the leader of Scotlands train drivers.

Not got an axe to grind have you!

Do you actually KNOW what happened in this case, the driver didnt just "pull a sickie" as you put it, but hey dont let the truth get in the way of a good moan will you.

no axe to grind would have liked a bit of honesty and consistency from ASLEF!!Maybe Mr Lindsay has been doing job to long and should be considering his own position as leader of Scotlands train drivers.

I find that hard to disagree with myself, and he doesn't even represent me.

What was it that you did? Can you not get your job back especiallly as Scotrail are so short of drivers?

A-Driver i think you are correct regarding commuting, at least in London. There is no other viable means of getting that many people into the capital and out again. Where rail could easily get the chop is anything outside the London commuting area and some main lines (WCML, ECML, West of England ML, and maybe a few others like Trans Pennine).

Often throughout viewing threads on this forum, I've wondered why people appear to think you suffer from delusions of grandeur. Your posting above makes me realise why.

The ECML, WCML and Transpennine Links provide vital links into and around London and Manchester (in particularly the airport) for not just people, but freight aswell.

Without these links, the pollution effect on the environment has a potential to damage and harm us seriously.

On another note.

Have you seen the queues at Glasgow Central on the high level SPT platforms? Put those peopke in cars and we would have total gridlock in the SPT area. There is no other viable means to get anyone anywhere from ANY big city.

Anyway, I digress. Back to the topic in hand. I suspect this could make or break Mr Lindsays union appointment, hopefully it is not the latter

I came into Yoker Depot at end of my shift with a set of empties(no passengers)the phones in the yard had not been working properly,so i called yard supervisor on my mobile and got permission to enter yard and did so,i booked off shift and went home.Next day i was told to report to driving supervisor and was told that i would be off driving duties for using my mobile phone in yard at 5mph with no passengers on board.I sat in house for 6 months on full pay until Scotrail director and ASLEF decided what their next step would be.At the end of 6months i was told to accept a directors review and the "sliding scale".this is a reduction in salary over a period of 5yrs.There was no shouts of ballots and strike action from Mr K Lindsay then.I was told later that a deal was struck to make an example of me to send out a message on using mobile phones. Thanks for the backing ASLEF,if only i had the same solidarity as is being shown to the driver in this dispute.

Its alright balloting the drivers for a dispute over the matter. Infact any union executive can put a ballot on its members - no problem - however its a question of getting everyone onside for the ballot and somehow, just somehow, I fear they won't this time around.

I am happy to be proved wrong however.

I don't understand. Use of a mobile phone to contact the signaller is permitted isn't it?That's what you did.

Were you driving whilst using the mobile or standing next to the broken fixed phone with your cab secured? Can't see any problem with the latter.

Whilst i don't want the thread to digress into mobile policy I don't see any problem using a mobile whilst driving to contact signaller/control/fleet/panel men etc. as I can't see how it is any different from using CSR/NRN/GSM-R which we can do on the move. We had a driver suspended for phoning fleet to report a train fault whilst driving. He got his job back on appeal largely due to the threat that the rest of us would stop the train every time the CSR went off or we needed to make a PA etc. The delays would have been huge.

You have my sympathies with that one as the mobile phone policies are some of the most over cautious and pointless rules around with little scope for common sense.

As it happens, he did 'just "pull a sickie"' and that's why he got disciplined and demoted.

The reasons why he did this are a point of discussion and the consensus currently is that he did the wrong thing and should have taken the leave he was granted and then taken it up on his return, having explained to Scotrail that this is what he was going to do.

However he told Scotrail he was sick, so he did pull a sickie.

You seem to have drawn your conclusions erroneously. You should ensure you have your fact right before mouthing off at me. They're not delusions, BTW.

Which is precisely why I said these and the London commuting area would probably survive any rail cutback.

Do try to keep up!

That is rough to be honest. There are rules, and then there management personalities that just have to throw their weight around.

Its good to see that ASLEF members have seen sense and decided not to back Kevin Lindsays call for strike action in this case.Kevin Lindsay should now be considering his own position as leader of Scotland train drivers as he is obviously out of touch with his members, its not the first time that he has done this and it is maybe time for ASLEF members to send a clear message that it is time for a change at the top.Mr Lindsay you should go now.

Presumably, the union is sufficiently democratic that Mr Lindsay has to stand for re-election every so often. That would be a good time for a clear message to be sent, but via the ballot box. It is always up to the staff themselves if they wish to take industrial action, not the union leadership, a fact that sometimes seems lost on the union bashers in the media.

While it might be argued that it was a mistake to arrange a ballot for a strike when it is ultimately not supported, I think it is going a bit far to suggest that one individual should be held responsible. One person is not responsible for the decision to hold a ballot, at least not in any union I have been in.

What was printed in the Sun doesn't reflect the feeling on the ground as far as I've heard.

Quelle surprise.
