More than one change from London

The only stations in England, Wales or Scotland that I can think of which can't be reached by just one change from London at some time in the week, are those between Middlesbrough and Whitby.

Can anyone think of any others?

Some stations on Merseyrail northern line eg Ainsdale needs two changes at Liverpool LS and Central or walk from one to other , via Manchester additional change at Southport , via Wigan is walk and Southport change .

Ramsgreave & Wilpshire, Langho and Whalley, if you exclude the Blackpool-Carlisle steam trains in summer.

All station between Cleethorpes (excl) and Barton (incl) except Grimsby Town and Habrough. I'm sure there's a handful stations north of the Clyde too that run into Glasgow QS and don't share a calling point with the Fort William portion of the sleeper.

A couple of the stations between Maryhill and Queen St are served by the first train from the WHL in the morning. Further, Stepps etc have an hourly service to Falkirk Grahamston, with its 1tpd to Kings Cross ;)

By my reckoning there's 18 out of the 21 stations on the Hunts Cross to Southport service that require 2 changes or a walk. There's then Kirkdale and all the stations east of it except Ormskirk giving another 11, making a total of 29 stations on the Merseyrail network that you can't get to London with one simple change.

Close to the Merseyrail network there's also all the stations on the Borderland line north of Wrexham now that Wrexham doesn't have a direct London service. In addition to that there's Stanlow & Thornton and Ince & Elton.

On another line the intermediate stations on the Victoria-Huddersfield line (Ashton, Mossley, Greenfield, Marsden and Slaithwaite) require 2 changes to reach London.

Sure there are a few odd trains which go all the way from Man Vic to Leeds and vice versa?

Marsden and Slaithwaite have a through train to/from Leeds late on a Sunday so can be reached from London by changing at Leeds (EC) or Mirfield (GC). The return may involve an overnight wait for the first train on Monday morning at either change point!

That's probably the one I'm thinking about. I know there is one service per day that starts at Marsden towards Huddersfield but can't remember if it goes through to Leeds or not.

And for Ashton-under-Lyne, you could change at Liverpool.

I'm mortified I forgot Mossley and Greenfield though

There's no trains from Manchester Victoria to Leeds via Huddersfield in the current timetable and I've never seen and heard of any. The Victoria-Huddersfield service did used to extend to Wakefield though.

There's 1tpd from Marsden to Leeds and 2tpd from Lime Street-Victoria-Huddersfield with no return workings so I suppose if you lived in Marsden or Slaithwaite you could go from your local station to Leeds to London and then back up the WCML to Liverpool and then across but there wouldn't be a return ticket valid or even a single ticket valid for the return option.

Might be thinking of that Liverpool service, and sure there is one to somewhere like Southport? Can't remember.

It starts at Marsden at 21:47, so I doubt it won't get to Leeds before the last London train. It doesn't run as a Victoria-Leeds service though as 142094 said and after 25th March 2012 it starts at Huddersfield not Marsden.

Yes there's a Southport train but with it not calling at Wigan North Western you can't really say that's one change from a London service even though it's not a long walk between stations in Wigan.

Maybe it should really be which stations are more than one change away from London using only valid routes.

Preston>>Edinburgh>>Kings Cross is one change but it's not possible with a Preston to London Terminals ticket.

Not quite...
Wrexham still has a London service - the VT to Euston.
And some Stanlow/Ince trains go through to Warrington BQ for a Euston service.

I thought Virgin withdrew that or is it next year that it's going?

Also the first arrival at Wrexham from Bidston is approx. 08:30. If the VT service is still running isn't that too late to connect with it?

And some Stanlow/Ince trains go through to Warrington BQ for a Euston service.

Does it have a return working? IIRC the last Ellesmere Port-Helsby shuttle continues to Lime Street via Warrington BQ and Rainhill to be at Lime Street in time for the evening peak.

The new franchise has it as optional for the bidders, but VT have no plans to withdraw it beforehand.
There was an erroneous post on here which said it would not run in the current timetable but it certainly does - I've used it!

NRT Table 109 shows a through working WBQ-Ellesmere Port at 0549 and back at 0653 after the early shuttles to/from Helsby.
There is also a 1604 back in the afternoon after the late shuttles; the through working from Warrington must be ECS.

Thinking back to the Whitby line - on Summer Sundays there is a direct service from Newcastle and Sunderland to Whitby in the morning, then a return one at night. There may also now be a service on Saturdays between Whitby and Newcastle.

Funnily enough, due to Engineering work from 9th Jan 2012, Lymington Pier will count as a station needing more than 1 change from London (Waterloo)!

The normal change at Brockenhurst, then the train terminates at Lymington Town, where you change onto a Rail-Replacement bus to get to Lymington Pier (with extended journey times of 10mins!) Although I am not sure if this counts?

Wasn't it due to an error in upload data which didn't show the Holyhead and Wrexham portion working correctly.

Interesting how few places there are that need more than one change, especially if you don't count those which can be prevented by a short walk across Liverpool or Glasgow (or a boat to IoW).
Shows how London-centric our railways are.
