Well it could be there are hordes of coaches that have broken off trains and noone has noticed all over the place, and theres been a snowstorm to take out all the points?

Cable Theft is getting ridiculous but there isn't much you can really do about it I suppose.

If you can't guarantee the safety of the signalling system how do you propose to guarantee the safety of passengers and crew?

Whats a pilotman going to do to help in such situations of large signalling failures? Hows that going to help when all your points have lost detection and you end up with one off the road (even at 5mph) becuase the points have spread under the train?

Exactly. bring back Absolute Block, and the days when there were like 5 signalboxes at Finsbury Park. And a fleet of Deltics, for when the wires come down.

That never seemed to be a problem in the old days. Probably because the gangers would be out & sort it out before anything got out of hand, rather than having to wait for a Rapid Response Squad to come down the motorway from 40 miles away.

I suspect it had rather more to do with the fact that the lineside areas were kept much much clearer back in steam days. You go and compare photos taken in the 50s with those taken of the same spot today and they're barely recognisable with so much vegetation growing on embankments and such like.

that as well, that is true. Again, though, for much the same reason; there were people available on the spot, rather than having to wait for the Vegetation Clearance Squad to come round once a year...
