On Saturday I saw a model railway layout and a train of (just) milk tanks was running, with a guards van. It occurred to me that the tanks would probably have been fully fitted as they were also run in mixed trains (e.g. on branch lines.) If this is the case, would they have even needed a brake van?
(On reflection I suspect the answer is Yes, if only because a guard wouldn't ride on a steam loco footplate, unlike the back cab of a diesel.)
