Getting the most out of the new Alstom units for TPE?

Disapointing 2026 to 2034 build 29 trains. That's about not far off the duration of both World wars.
Must do better or the much slicker Chinese will do the same as they have with the euopean car makers. To be successfully in business it is said you have to be slick.

Hopefully nationalisation will mean we have control of whats ordered from where etc, and a plan can be made to provide all of alstom, hitachi, caf and siemens factories with enough work to keep them open. And I suspect Burnham would place much greater emphasis on vehicles being British built.

When you look at that mockup on a big screen, can clearly see the end seats are raised on a plinth. But they also look like like ironing board seats.

They are very much like the (reliable) Italian ETR104 POP except modified to UK structure gauge where the floor has been raised and the roof equipment moved underfloor, compare the look

Unless prices have gone up by 300% in the last couple of years, there's something very strange here. The extra 345s were about 200 mill for a 90 carriages, so 800 for 145 is unbelievable steep, surely the chargers cannot possibly be more than a couple million
It's likely that the quoted amount is the total contract cost including infrastructure changes for charging, leasing of batteries deferring replacement costs to the manufacturer and maintenance of the trains for a set time period rather than the cost of just the trains themselves.

I'm not that concerned about the 110mph top speed. Only on the ECML will they not be taking full advantage of the linespeed.

Disappointed they're only 5 cars long, hopefully they are flexible enough to extend with more intermediate carriages.

The batteries must be huge. We're looking at pretty long distances without wires. And this will mean not being able to stop services short of the destination if the train is delayed.

I suspect they're showing the similarly shaped upgraded Thameslink seating.

We'll see in a few years time, but they're making a thing of how the ironing boards are being replaced on the 700s, it'd be perverse to order a new fleet of regional trains with those same seats which the transport secretary is currently criticizing.

To me this train order just confirms that we're never going to get a fully OHLE operated rail network in the UK... there will just forever be the excuse of battery-electric trains to avoid doing things properly in the first place.

We could've instead electrified properly and forever be able to order cheaper, more reliable, lighter and more standardised trains... but alas it seems we'll be stuck with BEMU all over the network that inevitably keep causing issues with failures to switch over between OHLE/Battery plus more general failures from it being a more complex system on board the train.

I wish we could just do what needs to be done instead of penny pinching as always, guess it's just a representation of the modern state of this country.

Anyway, moaning aside - will these trains actually be equipped with pantographs and be able to run from OHLE when it's available? Charging while running if necessary? Or are they going to be more like the GWR class 230 where it uses a bottom contact charging system?
This order shows how this will massively change the speed at which services can go electric versus the long timescale for OHLE installation with the attendant improvements in lower operating cost versus diesel, higher acceleration making better use of capacity into congested stations like Leeds and Manchester Piccadilly etc

Indeed trains like this design will likely lead to more electrification and much faster rolling out of electric operations across the network.

That's not to say their won't be a case for straight electrification schemes because their will be to better utilise existing stock eg Oxford to Didcot as an example.

Someone at Alstom had fun putting together their little promotional video for them... am fascinated by the "science lab" plug sockets bang in the middle of the tables, seems a quite intrusive choice of where to put them (plus potentially makes them vulnerable to people spilling drinks etc. over them).


As mentioned by a few others, disappointing to see this being done as a BEMU hybrid rather than just putting up wires for the whole route and doing it properly, but it's better than nothing I guess.

They have shrunk, originally were to be upto 195m long, with indicative 174 to 330 vehicles (29 trains plus 26 options), so would have been at least 6car with optional 7th car

This is doing it properly in this age. Batteries are more than capable of delivering the required performance and range for these service groups at much lower whole life cost than installing OHLE on all routes served.

Plus BEMU's have the advantages of being able to use non wired diversionary routes whilst also having substantially reduced operating and maintenance costs over the class 185's.

There's a trade off between top speed and acceleration. Given the number of stops on the route these will be used on, and the gradients, acceleration is probably more important - no point in an impressive top speed if acceleration is too slow to reach it before having to brake for the next stop.

TPE's class 397 CAF EMU order for its WCML services included options for adding extra vehicles into the basic 5-car unit, up to I think 7 cars.
Those options were never turned into orders, but it is possible the new BEMU order may have similar options.

Main thing that worries me is if it takes until 2034 to put a train into service if you order it now … how long is it going to be before we are rid of the 150s/156s? I thought northerns plans were for replacement to start 2031/2
These are replacing TPE's 185s. Northern has already announced a new fleet, although curiously the class numbers (780, 781, 382) have been announced but, as far as I am aware, not yet the builders.

Financially it is
€930m (£798m) for trains
€230m (£197m) for maintenance contracts

The press release says €360m (£309m) will be spent with British suppliers

11 September 2026 – Alstom, global leader in smart and sustainable mobility, has signed contracts worth €1.2 billion with TransPennine Express (TPE) for the supply and long-term maintenance of a new fleet of battery-electric trains. The British-designed and built trains will transform rail travel across northern England and support the delivery of the Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU).

The agreements combine a rolling stock contract worth approximately €930 million for 29 five-car battery-electric multiple units (BEMUs) with maintenance contracts valued at around €230 million. The fleet will be delivered from 2032 and will support the ongoing decarbonisation of one of Britain's most important rail corridors.

The order represents the first deployment of Alstom’s Adessia Stream platform in the UK and will deliver Britain’s first mainline battery-electric train fleet, combining high performance, operational flexibility and sustainable mobility.

"This agreement is a landmark moment for Britain's railway, and we couldn't be prouder that the country's first mainline battery-electric trains will be designed and built in Britain. The fleet will transform journeys across northern England while showcasing the very best of British engineering, innovation and advanced manufacturing," said Rob Whyte, Managing Director UK at Alstom.

He added: "Beyond the benefits to passengers, this investment will support more than 350 highly skilled jobs in Derby and over 5,500 roles across our UK supply chain, helping create opportunities, develop skills and drive economic growth in communities across the country. As momentum builds behind strengthening UK industry and regional prosperity, this project is a powerful example of what can be achieved by investing in British design, British manufacturing and British talent."
Devised specifically for the needs of long-distance regional travel, the 121-metre-long trains will operate at speeds of up to 110 mph and provide around 300 seats per train, including a First Class area with catering facilities. As the first new-build trains to be operated by Great British Railways (GBR), they will also offer passengers modern amenities including Wi-Fi, air conditioning, power and USB-C charging at every set, enhanced luggage provision, real-time passenger information systems, CCTV, dedicated cycle storage and quieter, more comfortable interiors.

Level boarding​

A defining feature of the fleet is its level boarding design at every door, helping deliver a more inclusive and accessible passenger experience while reducing station dwell times.

Each train will also include three dedicated wheelchair spaces, two accessible toilets, family-friendly areas and buggy storage.

Furthermore, the trains’ battery technology provides emission-free operations on non-electrified sections of railway. Charging infrastructure will be installed by Alstom at Hull, Scarborough and Saltburn, allowing the Adessia fleet to recharge efficiently during normal operations and supporting TPE's ambition to operate a fully decarbonised network. Installation of this infrastructure will be a UK-first on the mainline network and follows a similar successful deployment by Alstom in Ireland.
The maintenance contract – which will support over 100 roles – will run for an initial eight-year period, with the potential for a further eight-year extension, helping maximise fleet availability, reliability and performance throughout its operational life.

Alstom will train at least 36 apprentices and 36 T Level students over the contract, which is also set to benefit over 1,000 community members each year through the company’s established local engagement framework.
The new battery-electric fleet will operate on services connecting key destinations across northern England, including Liverpool, Manchester, York, Hull, Scarborough and Saltburn, supporting economic growth and providing passengers with a greener and more comfortable travel experience. The new trains – funded by rail investor Rock Rail – will replace part of TPE’s existing Class 185 fleet.

One of tghose figueres must include the installartion of the charging facilities, but it is not clear which.

If they're calling at Thirsk, won't they be running on the slow lines? 125 wouldn't be relevant there. And 110 will be good enough to not be a total killer if they end up on the fasts.

What other Adessias are elsewhere? The Irish ones for the DART started off as X’TRAPOLISes, before they were simply re-branded.
There’s some Adessia Max trains in service in France, a lot of Adessia Max, Stream, and Coach vehicles being built at the moment (which will basically be 5-7 years old by the time TPE receives theirs).
The TPE Adessias are basically rebranded X’Trapolises as well.

So the raw financial part deep down in the press release says rather more than all the PR spin sections plugging British this and that. Rather suggests it is a mainly French (or EU) train by value, with final assembly in Derby.

Another part of press release says around 300 seats (that sounds like PR spin which could say over 300, but doesn't, so presumably is 299 or less),
rather less than a 802, but about 50 more than a 5 car voyager. For reference a 5 car 444 now has 359 seats, a pair of 185s has 338 (including 24 tip up) seats

It’s crazy that 2034 is the planned introduction date, that’s almost 10 years away.
I'd well expect that many of the parts used in these trains are on a long lead time; maybe even a year. Any manufacturer of parts sitting around just waiting for this order, wouldn't be in business long. Got to get the staff trained, jigs built, designs agreed and finalised, materials confirmed and ordered. It certainly doesn't seem a long time to get started to me, but then I worked in the industry. Okay, the delivery period may be longer than ideal, but it does give a steady workload.

Level boarding equipment, depot costs, new jigs.. So many variables. The 345s were overhead electric only

What's the range of a battery powered train ?

I assume the batteries will recharge whilst under the wires ?

So these new trains go Manchester to Leeds (under the wires) then battery power to Hull?

But then, on the return journey, the line becomes blocked after Leeds - so the train terminates at Leeds an d goes back to Hull (on battery) before going back to Leeds. Is there enough life in the batteries to do this?

That's perfectly normal for any train in any country. Or any bus or car for that matter. Parts are sourced from specialist suppliers globally. My car was built in Germany, has a British-built engine and is badged as a British car.

The Adessia platform design and development is based in the UK, unlike other manufacturers. Derby is the global hub for the Adessia and benefits from orders around the world as a result. We might even see ones for other countries built there in due course.

Plus you have to remember that Alstom is a French company.
