I rode on 398024 today / Wed 1/7/26 (my first 398 ride) and most of what I'd have to say would just be repeating what others have said, but here are a few things I noticed:
- Although the 398s' initial steady electric traction whine is an octave lower than on the 756s, the ascending whine that follows when accelerating does sound like the 756 one.
- The 398s can also sometimes make some 'unique' / interesting electric traction sounds when slowing down.
- The automated announcements not only have the unfixed 'dim ond i', but they were also either jumping ahead or going behind in terms of stations (and saying, when between Radyr and Taffs Well, 'we have now arrived at... Llandaf' and so the Passenger Information System kept having to be reset).
Finally, it turns out that the 398s have exterior speakers at the top of the sides of the vehicles, like the 555s and 777s!
I saw 398021 on a training run, and as it pulled in to the station I saw it at, a manual announcement was made from the
398 over its exterior speakers, saying "this train is not in passenger service, it's on a training run. Please do not board this train".
