Just had a quick squizz at the old moves and gen book from May 1984, and Carstairs portions featured the following locos that month....

26002/007 (failure of 47/7
Now they would have been a nice score. I had them on railtours but not in general service.

I reckon they thought that on the short hop from Carstairs to Edinburgh, there wasn't enought time for the train to cool down or heat up after the Edinburgh portion had been detached.
Or, when they put a 47/3 on the 07/xx from Edinburgh in January, that the passengers would have time to thaw out between Carstairs and wherever they were getting off so would forget the cold start!

The Cleveland Executive. Carried on to King's Cross.

So many locos. And you probably saw more 08s on this trip than remain in existence today.

I remember a shunter at Edinburgh starting to connect up the steam pipes from 47215 to the portion for the overnight FO Paignton train once, before the driver helpfully pointed out the large "NB" painted above the locomotive number.

Found a few notes which I found and have been updated by an ex Reading driver so know are accurate, based on observations at Ruscombe:
Tuesday 10/6/1975
47360(TE) late running 1V58 1624 BNS working.
47359(ED) 4E85 Freightliner from Southampton.
50024 6B19 1918 Acton to St Erth( milks of course)
47315(TO) 4E78 a Freightliner working.
More observations to come as appropriate dates arise.

Thats it Alan, thanks, great find. Seems like it was pretty rare up there then! Shame it was run of the mill for us.

33046 going to Leeds and back was one of the most ridiculous pieces of diagramming of the 1980s.

I would add 73108+73134 doing Portsmouth-Birmingham on 1M87 in 1982 and then going all the way back on 1O92 as well. I was in North Wales doing 40s that day and missed all the fun.

Must have been a Saltley driver available! ;)
Was a Saltley driver involved in D1013’s run to Leeds, on a Swansea-Leeds cross country train in January 1077? From memory the Gloucester driver carried on from Birmingham, but he required a conductor in the cab.

If a Gloucester driver was on for traction knowledge, it would be the booked driver for route knowledge, not necessarily Saltley.

On this day, well does it include today? In this case I think it's allowed - some photos that Mr xot GD and others will like as well from the NYMR diesel gala.

On arriving at Grosmont I decided to have a quick trip to Whitby to hit the Co-op, plus the loco (37688) was a winner as well once I'd looked up its previous identity (37205). This was quite an entertaining run, with a driver who only understood two power handle positions, "off" and "bloody hell". A lady at Sleights on the return journey looked very concerned. I added another 35.8 miles to 47077 (which was over 3,000 already) and I sort of assumed that the violently orange 20166 was the sort of Toton 20 that I'd almost certainly had somewhere between Derby and Nottingham in the early 80s, but it was actually a winner as well.
