They're really not having a good day today!

That doesn`t sound good, do we know what problems they have experienced today ?

One or more units playing up ?

It's been a rough week, not sure why they're performing so poorly all of a sudden.

With the rise in temperature its possible that some units could have suffered cooling problems especially if GWR haven`t got there radiator cleaning regime sorted for engine and cooler groups.

I don't know what happened to 175011, but it was replaced with 002 on Newquay.

The other one that failed was 175111 in Exeter; which was apparently due to an issue with the doors.

Units still having door problems but they seem to be reducing ?

I don`t know if the units then get pulled every time they have a door fault ? but it was very rare to "cape" a unit with a door fault unless it was wrong side which was extremely rare and it would have been many many years ago.

Usually door faults were very well managed by the train crew to keep the unit in service, even doors A1 and B1 on 50 and 79 cars.

The possible 175 working the Newton Abbot airshow shuttle next week looks to have been changed to an 800.

Looks as if 111 failed at Par on 2C06, and 114 is now being used to rescue it (was on 2C20).

I'm seriously questioning why the units are suddenly failing daily. They weren't this bad at TfW.
They didn't spend years in storage when they were at TfW. Plus there was years of built up experience on how to deal with their foibles. Any fleet would probably struggle under these circumstances, but it would be especially challenging for one built by 2000 era Alsthom.

I agree about the storage issues being a factor for sure, If I could find the "Cold Storage" VMI document I would like to read it again and see what was detailed in it.

It wasn`t always great when we were maintaining them and we did have some occasional struggles along the way.

175s are a pretty specialised fleet with many foibles and we did have years of experience of them.

Uptick in temperature
Increased unit usage
More newly passed crew and techs dealing with them than previously

I know it isn’t hard work compared to most other fleets; but it is still more than they’ve been doing past few years

Both still stuck in Par it seems (in the down loop).

007 which replaced 114 on its diagram also failed in Exeter later on, and then on the Dawlish seawall. That one is now on the move towards Plymouth though.

They really do seem to be just dropping like flies daily.
Of course the weather's gonna have an impact and also storage issues causing the units to be rather worn out. I'm sure the maintenance teams at Laira are pulling their hair out over these.

Any information as to the failures including 111 earlier, as JN114 has mentioned heat related problems could be occurring now that its warmer ?

Unfortunately not I'm afraid.

I'd like to hope that the more they get run, the more reliable they will get, but that doesn't seem to be the case at the moment.

Depot staff and train crew are probably on a pretty steep learning curve at the moment and I hope depot staff can lean on Alstom for some advice but I`m sure all will come good sooner rather than later.

Maybe depot staff can join the forum and ask some questions and I will try and answer them, I`m saying this very much tongue in cheek :) and certainly not trying to insult their knowledge and expertise in any way.

Would it be at all possible to email and offer any knowledge you can, I'm not entirely sure how these things work but I'm sure they'd love a bit of assistance, even if it's just a few quick words!
Believed brake issues on 007.
Oh dear...

Believed brake issues on 007.

Thanks for the information.

Brake problems can be varied with the most common no brake release for a number of reasons and not just a brake problem. Other reasons reported could be poor brakes which was super rare, even with the Hydrodynamic brake isolated which it has been for years. Dragging brakes have been an issue at times with some genuine, most common when coupled and some spurious via TMS. It only takes a small air leak at one of the CLAU units - Closed Loop Analogue Unit - 2 per car, to cause dragging brakes which I have a video of. During the time that we maintained 175s I can only recall only a small number of times a unit ever failed a brake test on exam and it was usually a straight forward fix.

Without knowing the true circumstances of what the failure was we can only speculate which is a dangerous thing at times :)

I have considered that and very willing to help as I do want the 175s to be a success at GWR but I don`t know how an email would go down ?

I do have a profile on LinkedIn and a number of GWR staff have viewed it including Mark Hopwood but no contact up to now

I have no idea on reasons (my professional interest only extends as far as Swindon or Westbury), just suggesting why we might have seen a downturn in reliability

Thanks for the reply and even the smallest piece of knowledge/information can shed light on the possible causes.

175111 still resides in Par down loop after failing on Sunday morning.
Did 114 return to Laira at some point then, as both it and 111 were down in Par when the original failure happened on Sunday?

Sorry if asked, I am sure someone put a list up on here but I cannot find it, a list of regular 175 diagrams on the Cornish main line?
