SWR timetable refresh - consultation in Autumn 2026

Excellent plan! The stopper to Winchester could usefully be extended to Basingstoke. With the advent of GBR, the Southern service from Brighton could be extended to Bournemouth or perhaps Brockenhurst, so that this no longer blocked platforms at Southampton Central.
The Southern service used to run to Bournemouth but was cut back to Southampton as the reliability of such a long service from London Victoria was poor. Certainly worth reviewing now that the Southern service starts from Brighton instead.

The whole Basingstoke to Bournemouth route feels very clogged with two track running and few terminating platforms to free up space for through running.

The main critcisms I have of the current timetable are:
-only 2 tph at the local stations between Twickenham and Barnes. This is no longer a turn up and go level of service, and the plummet in their usage figures since the change reflects this. The Hounslow Loop service needs to be reinstated.
- efectively only 2 tph between Strawberyy Hill and waterloo (trains depart on both routes within one minute of each other)
- likewise the peak hour Shepperton services
- Kingston line only getting 2 tph every time the Rugby is on at Twickenham (as the Shepperton services are poached from the Kingston route to run via Twickenham, rather than running extras)

Totally agree - see also the current two 2tph to Epsom. Richmond to Kingston should be 4tph. A Metro concept for South West London is urgently required.

The Hounslow loop services need not only reinstating what existed pre-covid but even improving upon that. The 1tph that exists on the hounslow loop on a sunday morning before 13:00 is ridiculous for the greater Lobdon area, and that has been like that for at least the last decade if not longer. Really the Hounslow loop should have at least 2tph from start of service on a sunday morning.

Agreed with all that.

Services via Epsom should also be restored to 4tph. No station on the "metro" network should have less than 4tph. South Eastern achieved this a year ago.

That's one of those instances which when all other pathing, connectivity and platforming (at Waterloo) are taken in to account, is probably the best (overall) that can be achieved without compromising something elsewhere. A minor point also that the barriers might only have to come down twice per hour instead of four times, not that Wellesley/Tower Road is very busy..
I know the station/area very well indeed.

100% agree. Feels like this is something that ought to be rectified without having to wait for the full SWR timetable rejig, since it's just a reinstatement of what was there pre-2020 - so long as there are now enough 701s in service to make this reliable (commuting from Mortlake in 2019 it seemed there were a lot of cancellations/alterations, perhaps due to the 455s being too slow to board/alight/accelerate?).

This won’t happen until SWR have enough traincrew to run these services. Both the Epsom Line and the Hounslow Loop ought to have their previous services brought back, but SWR can’t until they have enough staff to reliably run these services. There is a big recruitment drive going on for this year which will continue into the next, particularly for drivers, so hopefully they get into a position where these services as well as peak extras etc can be brought back.

They seriously need to consider some form of BCP / East Dorset metro service to get traffic off the roads. There should be an hourly service down the Swanage branch to Corfe Castle and Swanage. Consider reopening a station at Boscombe. Fully integrated bus and rail ticketing within the area.

That I suspect is well out of the scope of near future initiatives. I believe the main aim at present will be working towards getting the base plan as per pre covid, or something similar, back up to strength before projects of a more major nature can be considered.

Realistically I don't think there's the capacity on the route into Waterloo for 4tph for all metro services - you'd have to add in 8 extra tph into Waterloo on the slow lines to achieve 2 tph to Epsom / Chessington / Hampton Court / Shepperton.

Which of course is one of the reasons why Crossrail 2 was originally proposed.

Agree with all of this.

Selfishly, it would be good to have the 2K trains brought forward by a minute or two to where a connection can be made onto the up Readings at Twickenham.

I go to Southampton University so don't have any experience of pre-covid service patterns, but I woud say XC doesn't need to be 2tph from Reading. I've never seen it regularly busy (cruise changeover and football days excepted). There's already the 2th GWR stopper between Reading and Basingstoke. One of those is close to the through XC, the other connects to the 1tph fast SWR from Basingstoke towards Southampton & Weymouth/Poole. However, it would be helpful for getting beyond Reading.

Cambridge really has a much higher service - if you think about 5-6tph from the KXSP lines, and 2tph more from Liverpool St.

Southampton really does rely on this single 2-3tph service, but is a much smaller demand destination - and Winchester is busier than Southampton for London Waterloo traffic, so definitely needs the call, even if it skips others like Basingstoke and Woking - or Airport Parkway on the odd fast.

A Reading-Bournemouth service would be useful - or reinstating XC - even increasing it to hourly to Southampton, giving 2tph Reading-Southampton (all calling Basingstoke, Winchester, SAP) - boosting the local service and any connections at Basingstoke.
Once you add Southampton Central (500,091) and Southampton Air PW (295,703) it just about edges beyond Winchester (692,962). And I'm not going to add them up, but I'd assume the stations beyond Southampton towards Weymouth have more passengers than those beyond Cambridge towards Kings Lynn. Ely and King's Lynn combined have the same numbers to London as Bournemouth (though there's more travel to Cambridge than to Southampton from their respective further stations).

The Southern service used to run to Bournemouth but was cut back to Southampton as the reliability of such a long service from London Victoria was poor. Certainly worth reviewing now that the Southern service starts from Brighton instead.

I agree. I was going to write about swapping the half of the hour the Winchester terminating stopper is in and extending it to Reading (need disel units though for the unelectrified section; maybe just to Basingstoke), but it would probably have a worse path than currently making it pointless for the new through journey opportunities.

I don't know what the loading is like on the London to Portsmouth via Eastleigh trains is like. Would it be possible to split them at Eastleigh and run half to Southampton Central/Brockenhurst and the other half to Portsmouth? This could be a partial replacement for the old Southampton stopper.

They basically need to (as a minimum) revert to the pre-2020 suburban off peak pattern. On the Wimbledon side this means putting the Earlsfield stops back into the Shepperton services and restoring 2 per hour on the Guildford via Epsom and Dorking services.

I don't know whether the peak extras that used to exist (inbound from Epsom and Teddington am, outbound just to Epsom pm) would still be required.

I wonder whether with almost all the 701s now in service, they could enhance the service even more? Extra services to Kingston, Hampton Court or even Chessington? There is a huge amount of development ongoing at Tolworth which presumably will increase demand.

Personally I would like to see the Guildford via Cobham and Woking services stop at Raynes Park as it would make a couple of my regular country-bound trips a lot easier!

As long as they still kept the same departure time from Twickenham to permit people to change from the Reading services to intermediate stations like mortlake

I think they’d need to, to get the right headway leaving St Margarets. Perhaps using some of that hanging around at Teddington & Kingston?

Rather than extend the second XC service south of Reading, I’d rather they reinstate the Reading-Portsmouth (previously Brighton) service.

There was an aspirational second hourly service between Portsmouth and Eastleigh but that’s not a useful termination point from a customer perspective. Winchester would be better but Reading even more.

On a separate note, you would hope that provision is made to keep four paths (1 from each of Southampton, Basingstoke, Portsmouth and Guildford) for the Southern access to Heathrow.

The SWT at Reading topic is interesting - as on Sundays, the service from Reading-Salisbury is an interesting connection and could possibly live on during the week as a frequency add between Basingstoke and both Reading and Salisbury. And feed local stations onto fasts in off hours/half-hours.

I'd forgotten about Reading-Portsmouth/Brighton. Was it well-used? Did it take the Brighton-Cardiff occasional slots?

Nothing like as well used as the Southern Brighton - Southampton services are now. The odd few GW services over the day, (only 2 arrivals and departures at Brighton per day, one was only from Fratton), ran in the SWT paths in the few hours they ran. A couple of SWT services therefore terminated at, or started from, Fareham. Brighton wasn’t served by SWT in the peak flow directions, the SWT ran to/from Portsmouth instead. Lastly, over the whole day, Reading to Brighton only operated a limited number of times at least 3 hours apart, the majority of the service was to/from Basingstoke. (Only 4 Brighton to Reading, but 5 Reading to Brighton.)

I posted the weekday SWT Brighton and Reading CWN Timings a few years ago, I’ll try and find it again. So here you are, it’s in Word format unfortunately:

The path very much no longer exists to Brighton however could to Portsmouth as the peak has two services per hour Portsmouth-Winchester (and beyond).

In the fading days of the Reading/Basingstoke - Brighton services, There was some interworking with Waterloo-Basingstoke slows thus the service usually using VEPs.

There was even a 12 car 0811 ish which split three ways to Brighton, Portsmouth and terminating at Basingstoke.

So a potential hourly Portsmouth - Eastleigh - Reading service? Might be interesting, and placate some of the Portsmouth XC - Liverpool crowd, and offer much of the same connectivity.

Down trains approaching Bournemouth are often held outside the station whilst the preceding one clears the platform, often losing 2/3 minutes. Regularly happens to a XC service running behind a SWT Weymouth-bound one.

So any extension of trains into Bournemouth from the east would need to be carefully timed.

It’s a service that I have often thought should be provided but you would need sufficient DMUs to operate it and they are in short supply for existing services.

Back in the days when this type of service was diagrammed to 4TC + 33/1 on Sundays, it needed four sets + loco's to cover the hourly service.

Would be easier if Basingstoke to Reading West junction was electrified, but whether you choose overhead or third rail you end up with a changeover point between the two systems at one end or the other. Some types of dual voltage rolling stock needs to come to a complete halt on the line to do the changeover which limits line capacity and others can do it on the move. I guess the West London Line north of Shepherds Bush Station is the equivalent scenario, but it is acknowledged that it is more efficient for the changeover to occur at a station when the train pauses anyway like at Acton Central. Unfortunately on the Reading to Basingstoke Line there is not an intermediate station at which all services call. You would need a separate dual voltage sub fleet to operate an electric service.

Swapping the Shepperton and Loop paths in one direction would fix it. On the Richomd side the affected loop trains could use the paths currently used (in the peaks) by the Shepperton via Richmond services.
This would necessarily increase layover times at Shepperton, but that is no bad thing as current timings are so tight they have to skip Earlsfield (and, far too often, other stations on an ad hoc basis!)
I wonder if 4tph could be achieved on some branches without overpowering Waterloo by running the extras as shuttles (eg 2tph Shepperton to Waterloo, 2tph Shepperton to Kingston, or running 2tph Waterloo to Waterloo and 2tph Twickenham to Kingston? After all, this is how the Undergrkund and Overground work - a limited number of through routes at high frequency, with connections between lines being the norm, even for heavily used end-to- end flows like Waterloo to Kings Cross or Liverpool Street

Would it be reasonable to assume that for the suburban services we'll probably end up back with service levels resembling the 2004 timetable?

When it's finally implemented, nearly 10 years after the COVID cuts, going back to the timetable introduced 25 years earlier will be sold as a big improvement to passengers..

Your first point is the sort of detail that will need to be worked up to establish the detail if there is to be a complete re-write, or they may stick broadly to the pre covid scenario? Also to be remembered that plats 1 to 4 became slightly less flexible than previously when they were extended in 2017. This was most apparent during the peaks when the peak additional's ran. Part of the trade off for having 10 car services/platforms.

As for shuttles involving Kingston (bay), this is where 701/5's could come in to their own, but they would need to be self contained shuttles, or a mix of the two shuttles (as you suggest) combined, to prevent overcrowding if a 5 car headed off towards Waterloo in the peak periods. In other words something like;

Twick-Kingston-Sheppy-Kingston-Twick (etc). This would use 4 x 701/5 in theory, for a half hour frequency on both shuttles, but would likely be driven by pathways and platform occupation at Twickenham.

The shoulder peak periods/loadings are another area that would need closer scrutiny, if such shuttle workings were to be considered, as there could well be demand for more through services in the peaks.

I have often thought that a 4tph 5 car Shepperton to Kingston shuttle, plus 4tph on the Kingston Loop and 4tph on the Hounslow line would represent the best use of limited resources to benefit as many passengers as possible.

Passengers from the Shepperton branch would have to change for destinations beyond Kingston but they would gain a turn up and go service to their nearest major town which would make the train competitive with bus services over Kingston Bridge.

Agree that the current Shepperton to Waterloo via Kingston services struggle to keep to time due to a lack of layover time at Shepperton.
