Looks like it'll be working 0D41 today according to RTT allocation. 37401 tucking in behind.

They did make a complete hash of the way they advertised it. If you could book to travel down on the 87 and then straight back on the 50 (or vice versa) it would have been a sensible day out. The way they sold it was pretty nuts, even by rail enthusiast standards.

From the footage I've seen both the Class 50 and Class 87 elements were not well patronised at all.

The 87 leg is hardly a surprise, departing Crewe at 3:30am or whatever silly time it was. That was basically an ECS run that they opened up for people to travel on.

The 50 element seemed to be a move to get people from the south to meet the steam charter at Crewe (I think) but the elements were bookable separately (which feels a bit different to the norm of just advertising the tour to start at Euston but with a change of traction at Crewe) which I guess was an attempt to attract diesel cranks to book that element without having to pay for the steam element.

It will be interesting to see if they continue with this approach, and if they do, whether they will review how it can be booked. Maybe offering the chance to buy "singles" on each tour would be the way to make it work a bit better to allow people to do whichever legs they prefer instead of having to buy 2x returns to get both locos in.

It would in my mind be more attractive if as someone suggested above if you could just book either a morning or evening return, ie go down on the AC then straight back on the diesel or v/v, BUT if the 45 comes out to play on one I'm there

Nope, they had a few offerings available for most of this year so far. The 87 / 50 legs were offered via Intercity.

There was some nonsense about LSL winding up the Intercity activities on another forum but that was never going to be the case. They will just continue operating it how they have previously done and advertise tours on a more ad-hoc basis rather than creating a full scale itinerary for 6-9 months like they do for their more popular (and money spinning) arms of the business. Intercity will always be a bit of a plaything used primarily to keep wheels turning and for crew route retention and traction knowledge

That is a very fair point. The other forum is living proof - any time a new "enthusiast" tour is announced, you have to syphon through 3 pages of people whinging about it before you find any interesting information about the tour

That new tour is a blinder. Not just the Portbury Dock branch, but also the Bristol TM avoiding line and the Hereford-Worcester line, which is very rarely done by tours.

I guess there is some tweaking of times going on - the steam leg is fully booked so can’t believe they’ll cancel that bit.

Yep, it is quite interesting as it seems to go against the usual mould of just doing "out and back" type trips which is what Intercity have tended to do in the past. A move towards "rare" track seems to be a reactionary move by LSL to try and maybe boost their work in the enthusiast market. UKR have done similar this year as well so maybe Pathfinder's demise is refocusing minds a little bit

Not GWR, the safety valve would be in the middle where the dome is. Can’t help with what it is though, sorry.

Judging by the size of the boiler and the height of the dome, it's a fairly small tank engine.

I'm on that. Going to be interesting at Shrub Hill in the morning. Only 8 minutes between the empty stock arriving and the scheduled departure, so it's going to be very tight for running the locos around through the yard. Unless they're top and tailed all day, but I can't imagine they will be.

Armathwaite Signal Box have said on Facebook it will be 47805 & 47810, but I've no idea if that is true or not. I'll wait until it turns up at the station in the morning to find out for sure.
